    Hi all,

I have a question regarding entry to scratch cups. Probably a stupid one but here goes.

Can a player with a handicap above the upper ceiling play in a scratch cup.

ie, a player with a handicap of 13 enter a Junior scratch cup that has a handicap range of 6-10 and then play to a handicap of 10 on the day?

    Cheers,
    Seorg

    I don't believe so.

Usually you can if the competition is not over-subscribed (in which case it might have a first-come, first-served approach and they wouldn't accept players outside their range or else work on the lowest guys getting entry). There are no hard and fast rules as the ranges and conditions vary from club to club and you'd have to ask them directly.

If there are nett prizes on offer and you are allowed enter outside of the upper range, your handicap would be limited to the upper ceiling so you'd be playing off 10 for the nett prize (but off 13 for handicap purposes) in your example but the main prize is a gross (scratch) competition so your handicap is irrelevant for that :)

edit: To clarify (I hope), you'd enter your handicap as 13 into the system (which would have an upper limit of 10 applied to the competition).
Let's say the par is 72 and you shot 82.
For the main trophy, you had an 82.
    Nett 72 (82-10)
For handicapping purposes you had a nett 69 (72-13) and you'd most likely be cut...

Shannon JSC is on 20/05, though you'd be hard pressed to any info on it as it's not listed on the GUI site or their own site. 36 holes, timesheet 8am - noon.

Due to hosting a GUI Leinster Qualifier, Moate GC is unavailable to most members on weekend of May 26/27 so my regular fourball have signed up for the Scratch Cups over in Castle Barna GC. Not sure what the exact handicap divisions are but I do know they have a Junior, Intermediate and Minor Cup to play for.

Athlone Golf Club Senior Scratch on this coming weekend, the 20th of May.
    2 rounds.
Meant to be having the connacht Under-18's and Senior panel down for it, so should be a good standard if anyone fancies testing themselves.
Contact the club at 0906492073 to get your name down for it :D

I'll be playing in it myself :D

There's an Intermediate also on this Saturday 19th May which I hope to play in. Played the course for the first time in April and the abundance of apple trees was quite unique.

Surely a chunk of good intermediate players will be nicked by the pierce purcell qualifiers that weekend?

Good point, never even thought of that, could just be all the intermediates who dislike foursomes format so like myself that will be playing. There's an intermediate scratch cup on the Sun also in Forrest Little.

    go to both!

there's probably gonna be aboy 1000 golfers otherwise occupied in leinster that day so intermediate scratch cups on those dates should be there for the taking IMO`

Dun Laoighaire Top golfer jun scr cup
Sunday the 3rd of June but at €45 that's a complete rip off imo.
Played a jun scr up there last Sunday that was organised by one of the members and price was €25.
Thankfully i got a nice prize out of it aswell.
One thing to note, as it's off the whites and it's always windy up there it could be a good oportunity for anyone looking to get cut.CSS last Sunday was 76,78 gross won.

( hope im not pushing this advertising the athlone scratcher too far! lol :D)

It's been removed from the Topgolfer schedule according to their website. They are replacing it with a JSC on the KClub smurfit course on July 6. ( which will probably be more expensive )

Played the Intermediate Scratch Cup on Sat and despite being under an abundance of trees and unable to score I enjoyed the day. Hat's off to Beaverstown the greens were in great nick, silky smooth and pretty fast which made for difficult putting with the tough pin positions and contours. Great prizes on offer too, new Ping i20 driver for first, so if the senior and junior are as good could be one marking in the calendar for all you low handicappers.

Ian Flanagan (Moate) won the Junior Scratch Cup in Moate today with a gross 72 playing off 4. Declan Mulally (Moate) won the Intermediate Scratch Cup off 10 with a gross score of 81.

Same as, hope to play in Old Conna and conquer the optical illusions that are the gravity defying greens. I presume that if you do get cut to 9 before hand you're ineligible to play? Similarly close to my goal of reaching single figures after a good score in Forrest Little scratch cup yesterday so one more cut in the next few weeks should do it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,468 ✭✭✭matt-dublin

Yeah, im at 10.5 at the moment, the the single figures goal isn't too far away.

Im thinking old conna will be a great opportunity to get the cut that i want.
