Could I Transfer From GMIT To NUIG

I have undenominated science in UCD as #1 on my level 8 list and undenominated science in NUIG as my #2. I then have undenominated science in GMIT as #1 on my level 7 list.
At the moment I'm unsure whether I can afford to go to UCD, it all depends on whether I get a job and whether my grant application is successful. If I get enough points and am offered UCD, will I be able to transfer from UCD or GMIT to NUIG having decided that I can't move to Dublin?

I'm pretty sure, no you couldn't.

If all places in the course are filled you wouldn't be able to. IMHO if you think it's that big a risk why not go for science in NUIG as a first choice or do you really want to get out of Galway?

To be honest, you're better off NOT risking getting a job and/or the grant! You can change your CAO application from now. That would be safe.

Ya I really want to, but it might be the case that I have no other choice and frankly I don't want to end up in GMIT.

Honestly, it depends on the course. For example, in first year I transferred from Engineering to Science (that was within NUIG, mind) but have heard of a couple others who transferred from other colleges such as Trinity, to Galway, after the first month.

So, yes, it is possible in some cases provided you have the points to begin with, and also provided there is space in the course, but - and I would stress this - I would not rely on this possibility enough to make a decision. It may not be possible in your case. You could maybe make some inquiries with the head of school at NUIG to explain your situation, and gauge whether your particular course has space every year, but that could be hit or miss. If it's very likely you won't be able to afford to go to dublin, then I would put NUIG as the top of your CAO form, if I were you.

In all fairness to GMIT, they do have a fairly solid, practical, science department.

Thanks for your advice, I appreciate it.

The problem is that if I were to go to uni in another city I'd have to pay at least 4 grand for rent not to mention other costs and I don't think my parents can or want to help me pay for this, especially when I live a 10 minute cycle from the NUIG campus. I've looked at student loans from the credit union, but all they offer is €1,500 which doesn't come to close to pay for rent. I'm forwarding my CV left right and center at the moment in an effort to secure a job for when my LC concludes but I'm just so worried that my attempts will fail.

Is it too late to change your mind for the CAO?

I have nothing against GMIT. I went to their open day and i know a lot of other leaving certs who didn't bother going because they think they're above it. It's just that I know I'll have enough points for the NUIG course so it will really disappoint me if I'm left with no other choice but to accept the GMIT one.
I'm aware of how industry focused the science course in GMIT are, but it lacks the flexibility of its NUIG counterpart where you can do anything from zoology to chemistry. I've also heard that employers will go for an NUIG graduate over a GMIT one anyday.

No, I have until July 1st, I can change it as much as I like between now and then.

To be fair, most who graduate with an undenominated BSc won't be getting a job without a postgrad as many of the jobs are in the specialised fields. Since GMIT has the industry focus, that *might* put you ahead in terms of getting a job.

If you have money concerns, you're probably better off changing the CAO preferences to reflect this.

And don't for the love of god decide what you want to do based on what your friends are doing, or what people on the internet say.

Your snobbery toward GMIT doesn't befit your financial struggle.

Your snobbery toward GMIT doesn't befit your financial struggle.

So my desire to go to NUIG instead of GMIT because I'm suspicious that the lecturing standard and the employment opportunities are not as good is considered snobbery? The Sunday Times & the QS world university rankings both prove that NUIG is a better university than GMIT so I don't understand how you're interpreting my attitude as one of snobbery? The fees in GMIT are equal to those of NUIG too so I don't understand...

    They "prove" nothing.

Snobbery is one of the best reasons to pick NUIG over GMIT. Unless you specifically plan to disappear into a lab job directly after a science degree you'll realistically be looking at doing a follow on Masters or PhD in a University to further your career. Like it or not NUIG has a far far stronger international reputation than GMIT and the contacts you build up in the University can lead to either funded research there or good references from (in some cases) internationally respected researchers. GMIT's science course may have good employment prospects but it can't offer that.

The NUIG science school is also much larger and able to offer many more paths to pursue in the field.
