Have an exam in an hour, need to find this out.

when the smoking ban first came in in ireland, was there general uproar? or did they all settle down after a couple of weeks and accept it?

There was that riot on O'Connell street when it was announced, and the protest where people went into the Dáil and started smoking.

They're the two things I remember most: make sure to mention those.

There was about 23 health inspectors gutted and strung up from the rafters of pubs in Dublin as far as a I remember.

The smoking ban showed everyone that the average pub dweller is one smelly bástard. That and people fart in pubs...a lot.

There was uproar as people realised the smell of smoke in the pubs had been masking the smell of fart for years.

Everybody bought 20 packs and stood united in the pub puffing them like chimney's as the clock ticked around to 12 and the law came in to force. As soon as the clock chimed 12 everyone stubbed out their cigarette, hugged each other and quietly moved to the smoking area.

Conformance, the Irish way.

there is nothing on google on peoples opinions. Just HSE guidelines and I was 13 at the time, so i dont remember.

13 is a bad age to have to leave the pub and go outside to smoke. Good chance your parents will see you.

It was introduced during the summer as well, so most people complied. The biggest outrage was from publicans. It contributed to the closure of a lot of pubs.

It was worse than the Roy Keane/Saipan incident.

People set fire to pubs all over the country, with the pub owners and their families sleeping inside. Sometime they woke the owners up, other times they didn't. It all depended on how good the quality of Guinness was in there. Poor and they died, great and they lived.

Micheál Martin's house was burnt to the ground. When he found a new one that was burnt as well. That process continued for about 6 months until he moved to Afghanistan.

There was riots. Some protested on O'Connell street but they were fired upon by an army helicopter pilot.

This pilot, Ben Ruchards, was later sentenced to life imprisonment but escaped. When he was re-captured, the networks paid large money for him to star in a violent tv show. I think it was called the running man.

Long story short, some of the show's crew had to split during production

Some people pointed towards the free market, a beautiful, natural phenomenon which, if trusted, solves most of these problems, and said fuck dudes, why didn't we use that instead of bringing in draconian legislation?

A good way of recognising a bad law is if it makes people act stupid when it's enacted. The smoking ban is a perfect example of this: huge areas in bars full of smokers, but because the area is covered by a tent and filled with patio heaters it's legal. Fucking nonsense, get rid of the ban and let pub owners choose if they want to have smoking in their premises. If they choose to ban it themselves and their business fails it's proof that popular opinion doesn't support these businesses, fuck clunky voting processes.

Nothing happened much, apart from the odd publican telling everyone that he was going to die of starvation because no-one would bother their arse going into a pub if they couldn't smoke.

Smokers headed off in their thousands to the designated smoking-zone in Outer Mongolia, and never came back.

A few people on here posted that they were going to kill someone, and got banned.

That was about it.
