Contact Sky and tell them it's for self install, the price on the UK site is £99 althought Sky were doing an offer for Irish customers so could be best if you ring the Irish call centre.

To buy one independently will set you back the bones of £300 Sterling.

That 99 is probably that you have to buy the HD package with the box (rip off)

My old sky plus box is dying and I was hoping just to replace it with a Amstrad DRX895 box

Lovely box - I ended up buying one on eBay over 12 months ago (Think I paid between £300-£350 Sterling excluding shipping at the time). Sky wouldn't budge for me & wanted to tie me into various packages &/or install charges / &/or HD Subscriptions & I didn't want any of that so I know I paid more in a one off cost but its been a very reliable box for me to date & the capacity is great to have. I've no regrets.

Just SD connected through HDMI to my plasma looks so much better / cleaner then through the previous box's Scart lead I had been using. So I see a really good improvement even on SD (through HDMI) & HD can be stunning. Some of the bitrates on the Sky Channels do not look high enough though :)

I got a reasonable deal off Sky last June, it was the deal that was going at the time.

    Sky+HD 1TB box (it has a 1.5 TB drive) 49 euro
Installation (rip off as it was just replacing existing sky+ box) 30 euro
HD pack for a year but first three months free 9 x 15 = 135 euro
Total cost of box including HD viewing for the year = 214 euro

When you consider the hundreds of euro some people spent getting this box from elsewhere and no HD viewing, this worked out quite well in the end. I wasn't happy about the installation charge, but in essence I didn't pay for the first three months HD viewing so saved 45 euro there, so all in all, it was a good deal. June seems to be the quietest month for Sky so good deals to be had then. Keep an eye out next month.

Got one on Adverts.ie at the weekend. Guy from Waterford, met in Dublin at the weekend. Said he had more pending delivery. May be worth a shout... €100.

(Sorry if link is against boards rules. Mods, feel free to remove - I am not the seller, but did buy one off the guy and all works ok)

I thought the same!! I was also fighting with my conscious over whether I needed more storage, but it lost and I bought one!

Met the guy last Friday evening in Lucan, paid for it, got home, plugged in, called Sky, paired card and hey presto! All good :)

Well done - that was a very good deal. Knew I should have held off but I'm an impatient git at times :D
