Velux v Fakro Roof windows

    Hey all

I am putting two roof windows in my garage so I must decide in the next week what to go with. From what I can gather velux and fakro are the two main brands in my area with the fakro approx €50 cheaper per window (78 x 98 dimensions)

As the garage attic apace will not be used for anything rather than storage (for forseeable future) I am inclined to go with the fakro windows so just wondering is there any major difference/problems with these windows.

Have the brochures for both types and do not see huge difference at this stage. However I would have no problem paying €100 extra for velux if they were a better more durable product.

    Anyone got opinions?

We put three fakro roof windows in when we were building our house back in 2008/09. They're working fine, no problems with them at all. Two of them are in the attic storage space and one in the double height hall so they haven't had much opening or closing/abuse. They seem solid enough.

As far as I can remember I phoned fakro head office and they gave me the mobile number of the sales agent for my area. The sales agent gave me a better price (after a bit of haggling) than I was getting quoted over the counter in the local builders merchants but I still had to order through the builders merchants.

When we were ordering our windows there was a significant difference in price between the Velux (more expensive) and the Fakro. One of the other reasons that we went with the Fakro was that they do a window that opens centre pivot and top hung combined which has it's advantages where as at the time Velux only did either or.(that may have changed now) I'd recommend the Fakro roof windows.

I've used both Fakro and Velux, and there's no difference in quality terms as far as I can see.

Not relevant to you, but Fakro are way ahead of Velux as regards producing highly insulated roof windows, an area which will become more and more important as people realise just how much heat goes out through roof lights.

And yes, they're also significantly cheaper.

I purchased triple glaze Fakro recently that were approx the same price as double glaze velux. That made my decision easy.

Put Fakro in my own house and are very happy with them. Just as good as the Velux windows. Saved several hundred compared to the Velux.
