want to get a pre built machine really or something like customized dell. rather get it from a recognised retailer.

You don't have to build your own to build your own. The place were a lot of people here recommend will build it for you for 20 euro.

to be honest and wouldnt be so keen to buy the very very best pc, i would buy just 1 step under.

have a look at these 2 from alienware http://www.alienware.com/Landings/desktops.aspx
the one on the right is not 2 times better , but is 2 times the price.
money might not be the issus for you, but techonolgy is rapidly becoming better and better and the it would be better to get, in my option the one on the left and save a lot of that money , and buy anotherone in a year or so.
You wont have a problem running anything on the left one
my only concern is it's a bit short on memory (ram). but still very good.

office work. Do you think you will be using the pc for a lot of office work, if so you might want to invest in mirosoft office for €100 or use libre office for free.
all extras are under customizes at the dell checkout .

again , you might be able to afford the most dearest pc there is but do remember , in a few years times it wont be as good as your phone(bit of an over statement but you get the point).

Get value for money as well as a great pc.

Also i wouldnt invest in 3d , and dont buy headset and speakers off them , get them cheaper in pc world or somewhere like that
dont buy priters and other stuff like that off them ,and espically 30 day free mc security protection or , phone support for 4 years.

If you really want a seriously fast computer then you should get somebody on here to spec you one and build it for you. You'll get more bang for your buck that way and you'll get one built specifically for YOUR needs.

As above I would not bother with alienware, been there & bought one.they're not all the cracked up to be, you're paying top dollar but they scrimp on things like PSU's, RAM etc.

Much better get one built for you as you can decide on what exact components you require, and if you're paying 2-3k you could get a very decent rig easily.

Research & decide what the components match the requirements of the programs you pan t run (>16 Gig RAM, Multithreading CPU, etc.) and go from there. For that money you could easily go 27-30" or Multi screen as well.

edit: If you feel better about a pre-built system for support reasons, Scan's 3xs systems blow Dell/alienware out of the water.

If you are based in Dublin I can build you a computer that will beat any Dell/Alienware/whatever for much much cheaper. You'll also have a longer warranty on each part, better upgrade options and a customized computer to suit your specific needs. It really is a waste of money to go with a pre-built.

Decided to change around completely and not go with a pre built as I saw how easy it is to put one together rather than pay a rake of more money. Budget is not strict but in or around that price. Preferably the case would be very upgradable and have plenty of options.

Just as an aside, since it's related to the OP's question.

Is there much point in spending 3K on a machine, in order to have an amazing computer now, and "futureproof" it?

I mean the peripherals should last years and there's not much room to upgrade. Same goes for card readers, a good qaulity case, fans, etc.

don't particulary like the case but is this interchangeable?

it says that its an upgrade copy though?
I'll wait a bit not for the ivy bridge but I'm hoping that the SB will be cheaper and I should be able to use that student site soonish and would want to avail of that. Is that mother bord decent? Would rather get a quality one and cheap out on something else that'd be easy to upgrade later. Any better (smaller) wireless and card readers available? are they easy to install?
Is it really simple-ish to build it yourself? Easy as in it would take me a...day? to put it all together once I've got the parts.

About the "quality" of motherboards, there's no difference unless you're overclocking. Go for the chipset you want, look for how many SATA ports you want (how many of them 6Gbps and so on), and other features, then pick the cheapest one. Maybe look at how long the warranty is.

It's easy to build yourself, the few things you need to be careful with are installing "distance washers" in the case (if they're not installed already) for the motherboard. Be careful when installing the CPU so you don't bend any pins in the socket on the MB. Be careful about ESD, use an anti static wrist wrap or similar.

- HDD is okay, expensive for the size though..
- I hope you meant the i5 2500K... thats the 2500 you have.
- Expensive motherboard, and get Z68/Z77.
- RAM is fine.
- Optical drive is fine.
- Love that case, was going to get it myself but went for power over looks in the end.
- PSU looks cheap, don't see any details of the brand or anything, although reviews look good.
- Onboard sound is fine really, I don't know much about Soundcards so can't help you there.

Do you plan on buying from Amazon or just used that to show everything.

- Love that case, was going to get it myself but went for power over looks in the end.
- PSU looks cheap, don't see any details of the brand or anything, although reviews look good.
- Onboard sound is fine really, I don't know much about Soundcards so can't help you there.

Do you plan on buying from Amazon or just used that to show everything.

plan on buying cheapest really. Is there a lack of power in the case? Would this be good enough to play modern games and edit videos?

Cheap for a PSU is bad. The best that would happen is it will damage your components over time, causing BSOD. The worst, it could start a fire. Don't go cheap on a PSU

That's both true and not true - go with a good brand (Antec, Corsair, OCZ, Silvestone, XFX etc). Many are rebranded (which is not a bad thing). You don't need more than 450-500 watts unless you're overclocking and/or going SLI/Crossfire.

Anyone have any thought on this build? Comes to around 620 and with windows should be around 700. Will it play new games and will photoshop and such applications work on it? By my workings I think its safe but I've not had a desktop for years so I'm out of loop. Any idea how future proof it is? I plan on upgrading it so any idea if the case allows? I think it does but want to double check. Depending on feedback I think this is the one I'll go for. Thanks for all the help
