+1. Being bipolar is a terrible affliction from what I've seen. Being bipolar and in the limelight? Jesus. Perfect storm time. I met her years ago. Seemed very pleasant and a little mad(in the better sense) and genuine with it. Hopefully getting out of the biz will help her.

I absolutely agree with you, but she doesn't come across well in the public eye, I for one could do without hearing about her.

ripping up the pope showed amazing foresight, did it not?

i think though Wibbs there is an unfortunate trend though lately for celebrities to claim they are bi-polar as an excuse for their attention seeking behaviour, and this does a dis-service to people who genuinely suffer from the condition.

sinead o connor could've easily disappeared from the limelight and gone quietly. intead she courts the media and publicity and has built her "career" on doing so for the last 20 years. a quick google gave me plenty of celebrities that have claimed bi-polar dosorder for their erratic and irresponsible behaviour to garner sympathy and attention from the public.

this is what makes people cynical of any celebrities motives in claiming bi-polar disorder because it's becoming increasingly harder to distinguish the attention seekers who seek to revive their flagging careers, from those who genuinely suffer from the condition.

i expect this to be moved to the celebrity and showbiz forum shortly anyway.

EDIT: i fully expect her to make an appearance on the late late show shortly too, just in case world+dog doesnt bother with the twittersphere.

I agree with you in regards to other celebs doing this but Sinead's behaviour has always been typical Bi-polar behaviour.

The media has lapped it up and presented it in a snide and cruel way. People have then lapped it up and slagged her off. Some people get great pleasure in others misfortune. That's what sells bitter rags to clowns so they can feel superior.

Oh too true. You don't have to go to celebs either, you can see it in everyday life. The amount of people you meet today claiming depression or some other mental illness to garner sympathy/attention/evade responsibility/fit in[delete as applicable] is very high IMHO. Significantly higher than a generation ago. Yes it was very much hidden in the past. Genuine sufferers were "ah shure he suffers from his nerves" BS. However I don't believe the popular stats for a second. Again IMHO a goodly chunk are low level "sufferers" of firstworldproblemitis.

That said X one could argue that her behaviour is pretty a good match for the condition. Diagnostic even. I'd also say that if she was doing this for the publicity throughout her career it didn't help said career, or become a get out of gaol free card(unlike with some others). It's been a serious disadvantage for her. Just my take, but I think she's genuine with this.

People look at this example of a recent appearance on Graham Norton. I think she explains it well herself (1:47). I have also attached the performance (as it is amazing)

I don't find Sinead's mental illness half as annoying as Jedward or Boyzone but I suffer from the same illness as Sinead so what would I know?

The only harm she has ever done is to herself. I wish Sinead peace in the future.

That's pretty much the thread opened and closed as far as I'm concerned.

She worked very hard to overcome her talent and become irrelevant. Job done, let's move on.

I think it's a good thing for celebrities/people of note to be open about the likes of mental health issues. We still live in a world where to have one is almost akin to leprosy. Hell, even some of the posts in this thread prove it. And to those people: I hope you never experience mental health issues and then know exactly what it is like to have one.

That's sad, she has an incredible voice, a truely talented artist. Just a shame that she is given the spotlight for the wrong reasons. She certainly never deserved any of the backlash she gets but if she needs to get out of the public eye to sort herself out then good luck to her. I hope she can find the strength to manage her illness and return in the future. And I hope people will not be so rapey with her personal life when she does.

Aye. I'd agree with you there. Poor old Carrie Fisher has had a torrid time with it too over the years. It's been extremely difficult for her family too. Although, I heard she's been much better over the last few years.

I think she is being very brave! It's not an easy decision to cancel the tour. She's admitted defeat, holding her head high with no shame and yearning to get on with her life.
I wish her all the best.

What she ripped up was a picture of the Pope. She committed an act of violence against a piece of paper. It was symbolic. After all, the Protector of Paedophiles Everywhere is himself the head of a religious organisation that, as its central ritual, drinks the blood and eats the flesh of its founder. Symbolic cannibalism, if you wish.:D

I hope she gets her condition under control and that the hangers-on who have been such a bad influence on her now leave her alone and let professional persons help her.
