PedalToPoland is a scam?

Is it just me or does anyone else think this is a bunch of lads who are using charity as an excuse to get a free trip to the euros?
If it was really all in the name of charity would all the money they're spending on accommodation, flights, food etc not be better given to the charity.
We'd all love to go to the euros but using the pretence of charity as a way is a bit wrong I think.
Bunch of chancers if you ask me.
    Anyone feel the same?

Each cyclist is asked to raise €3000 to take part in the trip and help us reach our overall goal of €50,000

The charities will benefits massively from this.
It's all about getting promotion, and they're obviously doing a good job.

Ya I think any event where your basically paying to send a group or individuals away on a holiday of a life time is a bit of dupe but if ya dont want to contribute then dont, its similar to people asking for sponsorship to fly half way around th world to climb a mountain.

yeah they should just cycle there and back and not see any football....

you need some reward for charity, the whole way through life we see it. sposored parachute jump, MS readathon, tax breaks etc.

There are some exceptions (shave or dye for example) but they still have a fun element and you usally get a few pints to boot.

OP why didn't you sign up or offer to do it too?

A few pints is very different to a trip of a lifetime. They're chancers

no chancers are the lads from Cavan who were on today fm who pretty much blagged their way.

these lads cycling? thats an effort and i say fair play

So let someone else sponsor them and give your money directly to the charity

I will thanks, doesn't mean I can't voice my opinion on it too!

No you don't, when I want to donate to Charity I will send them cash directly.

Not via a Holiday Fundraising event where it is never clear how much of my donation will ever get to the Charity.

Fed up with these 'Holiday of a Lifetime' Charity trips, I won't be donating to any more of them.

People who wouldn't normally donate to charity do for these one-off events, and the person raising the money gets to do something they wouldn't normally do, and the charity gets donations it wouldn't have otherwise gotten.

Everyone benefits, don't see why it would be an issue.

But how much goes to the Charity once the Holiday is paid for? Not much, I suspect.

Lots of people with Brass Necks do these schemes to fund their lifestyles and then pressure their friends into supporting them.

I hope none of them expect to collect job seekers allowance while they are doing this cycle.

More than if they didn't do it I'd imagine (in most cases, at least).

    Tbh, no-one was asking you.
You voluntarily registered to boards to start this thread to try to throw doubt on the charity.

This is more heavily weighing on the person gettin to do something they wouldn't usually get to do though, and using charity as an excuse.
Pretending they're great people doing work for charity when really it's for their own gain!

I like to complain about all charities and fundraising efforts and use those complaints as a way to feel good about never eva donating.

    Perhaps.

    But everybody benefits.

You don't want to donate to them then don't donate. But regardless of their true intentions everybody benefits. If they didn't do it then the charity wouldn't get the money they would have raised.

    It's a win-win.

Lucky I said IF you ask me then isn't it.
I also wouldn't really call this a charity, just a bunch of lads wanting to watch football and using charity as a way to do it.
Id say half of them will never do any 'charity' again after this trip of a lifetime

Well that's just speculation, they could all be volunteers for Concern (or whatever charity) on the weekends for all you know.

And even if they don't do any charity work again it's more reason for them to do this now.

Why not cycle around Ireland for charity, why, because they wouldn't get to see the football.

    Maybe.

Or because it's a great opportunity to raise awareness.

    From the site.
Why did you choose a breast cancer charity and why Poland?

It is an important cause for two members of the team, who have friends and relatives who sadly developed the disease.

    How can I donate?

We’ve set up an account on justgiving.com which manages the donations. Click on the image below to see this page. All money donated via justgiving will go directly to the charity Wear it Pink.

The costs of the cycling expedition (travel, food, accommodation, equipment) are being met by us. If you’d like to help us meet those costs too, please let us know!

    There you go.

Could have at least Googled them before you dismissed them as chancers.

Because there are tons of charities that already cycle around Ireland raising money.

I really don't know what your problem is. When people raise money for charity this way it's normally their friends and family that donate, it won't cost you a cent. Even if they manage to hand over €50 to the charity, isn't it better than sitting on their holes and doing nothing but complain about other people that have the drive to do something? Damn right it is.

What makes you think I didn't Google them first. I did as it happens, but im not convinced.

The money spent on equipment, travel would be better given to the charity directly.
Why go all the way to Poland.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,037 ✭✭✭Plazaman

I think it's about the same as the likes of the Niall Mellon trust or any of these build for Africa programmes. You raise a minimum of €3,000, the organisers get group discounts on accomodation and travel so between half and three quarters of the money still gets to the charity who will benefit.

And they're cycling to Poland FFS. That's a long way. The least they deserve is to get to see a match.

No on the rocks actually, and I don't use charity money to pay for them :-)
