Media files causing laptop to freeze.

OK, couple of weeks ago I turned on uTorrent and halfway through a download, the computer froze, the mouse, keyboard the whole lot. When I turned it off and turned it back on again, started uTorrent again and deleted the download before it finished checking and it worked fine again, until I started a new download. It froze again. So I repeated the process and decided not to use utorrent until I could figure out what was going on.
Next, I tried playing some of my existing video files on my Xbox through TVersity Media Server, and this also caused my laptop to freeze!
So I stopped using TVersity, and tried to play the movies on WMP, which also caused the laptop to freeze. It seems just to be with video files as audio files work fine on WMP, although I haven't tried to download any new ones through uTorrent and haven't played them through TVersity.

I've tried running the disk check that runs from tools when I right click on my Hard-drive, and when I check the box that says "Scan and Attempt Recovery of Bad Sectors" it freezes halfway through the scan, whereas if I leave it unchecked it completes the scan without freezing.

Anyone got any ideas on what the problem is and how I can fix it?

    Cheers.

Edit: It's running Windows 7 Home Premium.

Try a system restore from a date before it happened. Download and run malware bytes(free).

the chkdsk not finishing would worry me ,

check the h.d smart status in computer management and if possible download a h/d test software from your h/d manufacturer.

with regards to the video freezing - could be worth updating your codecs - klite codec pack for win7 would be my recommendation. however i would be surprised if the two issues arent linked.

depending on your laptop model some manufacturs include a diagnostic run , check and run it . at least that will count out hardware failures.

Tried Malware bytes already, I'll try uploading them codecs and if that doesn't work will try a system restore. Cheers guys!
