2006 passat!

Just looking for a bit of advice or ideas, I have a 2006 1.8L passat, travelling home from work today and I noticed a clicking noise from the engine which was older in lower gears. As I went to accelerate there seemed to be less power and I definitely noticed the difference as I was going up a hill, the power just was not there. As I accelerated the car was shaking. I haven't got it long, any ideas what's wrong??

Any warning lights on the dash?

No warning lights at all just a very dodgey noise. Went out to the car there again to make sure there were no dash lights on and the clicking is louder but sounds more like a thud, that probably sounds ridiculous sorry!

Sounds like a big end bearing is shot, hows the oil level?

Have you checked the obvious like oil etc?

You mention its an 06 1.8 though....there wasn't any 1.8 engine available in the passat in 06. Is it a 1.6?

It's a company car and that's what they had said it was I must find out exactly what it is if that's the case, thanks!

Is it safe to drive if a big end bearing is gone?

    The oil is fine!

I wouldn't like to recommend driving with a big end gone (if it is) could go for many miles, could seize in the driveway..

It's not a 1.9 TDI by any chance is it?

Ok fair enough!! I won't be driving it so!

    Is this expensive to fix?

    I can only assume if it's not 1.8 it's a 1.9, have u had similar problems?

    Is it petrol or diesel?

Jumping in with big end failure straight away is getting a bit ahead IMO. Unless the car was constantly run with very little oil in it then a failed big end is extremely unlikely on VAG engines.

Sorry I left out its diesel at the start. I do serious mileage in the car as I travel one end of the country to the other

Sounds like when the fuel pump went on the 05 passat I was driving years ago.

Not saying that's what it is or anything...

A friend has a 07 passat estate and the fuel pump went on that too only last week

I'm just speculating more than anything. It is quite a common fault on earlier passats though

Just wondering how a fuel pump failure would cause a knock in the engine..

Doesn't matter what engine gets shy on oil, when oil starvation occurs b/e's are the first baby to show there're teeth

Quite the opposite, the cylinder head is generally the lowest oil pressure point in an engine so when low on oil its the tappets etc that would get very noisy first.

If there was no oil pressure at all(failed pump etc) then the same would be true although obviously the time between hearing noise in the head and big end/main bearing failure would be vastly less.

Tappets will rattle true, but the b/e's will stop the show end of

Of course they will 'stop the show' if they fail but they certainly wouldn't be first thing to suggest if someone has a noise in their engine.

Grand second or third will do and that's pending there're hydraulic tappets
