    Nice one for resurrecting this as it's a great thread...definitely going to check out some of the bands mentioned.

    Ende Neu by Einstürzende Neubauten is one of my favourite non-english albums...it's arguably also one of their most accesible albums.

    Les Chemins de verre by Karkwa (from Canada) is a really great album...check out the opener below.

    Surprised nobody has mentioned Luna Park by Kila :).

    Would Cocteau Twins records fall into this category? If so, I'd have to nominate 'Treasure'.

    Come to think of it, I really don't know all that much foreign language 'Indie/Alternative' music....

    There's a polish group though that I really like called 'Dikanda' - their album 'Jakhana jakhana' is one I'd strongly recommend and is probably my favourite non-english speaking record. I think it's a 100% acoustic, lots of ethnic percussion and some really good songwriting. You tube 'La Giesango' if you have the time.

    The first L'hasa de Sala record also gets an honourable mention.

    One of my faves is Latvian band Brainstorm (Prata Vetra). They sing in Latvian, Russian and English.

    Excellent thread and impressive worldly knowledge on display here, I'm gonna check out as much of it as I can.

    My recommendations would be Klaus&Kinski from Spain and Gotan Project from Argentina/France.

    Of course there is tonnes of good French music about at the moment also, I think Noir Desir and M83 have been mentioned. St. Germain are cool too. A lot of that is instrumental though.

    I guess there are a fair few bands from non English speaking countries who release music in English, such as lots of Swedish bands...

    I am listening to a few Italian bands lately, and I don't understand everything they sing about, I get the gist of it. Now I know what it must be like for them listening to English speaking bands!

    I was at Tinariwen last week, and not a word of English between then, they could only make a small speech in French at the end. Mine is rusty at the moment!
