Heading home to the parents house in Ashbourne for the Easter weekend, and would like to get out for a spin on Monday morning, weather permitting, for a change of scenery from the Wickla mountains.

Can anyone recommend a decent, challenging enough route around south Meath and/or North Dublin?

What distance would you fancy? From Ashbourne, you could take in the Naul, over to Skerries, Balbriggan, back in to Duleek and then some more climbs via Ardcath and Garristown. Something like this.

You could also go in land to Trim, Navan, Slane, if you'd prefer more Meath and less North County Dublin. The only thing with that route is that the N2 is fairly long and boring north of Ashbourne.

I agree with above poster that N2 is too boring for a cycle. A nice one (in my opinion) would be Ashbourne- Skryne Hill- Tara Hill- Dunsany- Summerhill- loop back to Dunshaughlin/Dunboyne and then back to Ashbourne. This would be approaching 80km (if you did the full route via summerhill and dunboyne).

I'm really not sure how long a ride you want though? If that's too long I'd leave out Summerhill entirely.

    Thanks for the replies.

In and around 80-100km would be ideal, have had a handy enough weekend cycling-wise so far, ~175km and ~1750m alt gain, and apart from the relatively flat 25km cycle home I'll be doing nothing more than eating tomorrow.

Want to avoid the N2 as much as possible, and any other similar long stretches of main road :o

Up the coast to Drogheda, across Duleek to Tara, coffee and scones, back to Ashbourne via Dunshaughlin and Ratoath, or is it Dunboyne.

    I'd go Ashbourne - Swords - Malahide - Howth/Sutton - Malahide - Naul - Ashbourne
