Merceses M class commercial diesel

Looking at a good second hand M class commercial diesel. Never driven one before. Anyone know if it's safe to assume that they are very hard on diesel?

top end 31/32 mpg on a run, doing 55-60mph.........as for the M-class itself, the older old ones are dreadful yokes, the worst things merc ever made.

The 270CDI engine wasnt in the 2006 models,they are 280 or 320 but in fact are both 3 litre diesel just more bhp in the 320.The 270 engine was used in the rexton after merc were finished with it.
