Tried running the Foldathons around here last year (with sig links), but we didn't get much. I imagine pretty much everyone here disables sigs. :P

I think I'm the only person in Tech that has their sigs enabled

I just enabled mine so you don't feel left out. :D

Have been running a PS3 for about 5 hours a day for months.
My work computer is an 8 core i7. So, today I donated 50% of my 8 cores to assist the cause.
It also has an ATI Radeon HD6570 beast but I believe it's incompatible with the GPU core :(
Might try to install FAH on some more work machines over the coming days :)

FahMon is estimating about 6000 to 10000 PPD. We'll see in a few days when it settles down.

Are you still using the v6 client? Because AMD 5/6/7 need the new client (with the new cores):
    http://www.overclock.net/t/977412/windows-7-complete-client-v7-guide/0_100

If you've not used it before, you can also set that client up to Fold on your i7, so you can have both clients in one. ;)

I don't know if Fahmon supports the new client (since the logs are quite a bit different), so you might have to use HFM instead.

Yes, yes, yes. Puter is vrooming now. Running CPU and estimating 20000+ PPD.
Downloading Catalyst to get the CPU running. Should be fully up by 10pm :)

The GPU unit appears to be using a CPU core. Is that right?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 555 ✭✭✭zodac

What makes you think it's a CPU core? What project is it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,258 ✭✭✭RangeR

I'm using the term "core" lightly. More, a core worth of CPU cycles. 8 cores = 100%, 1 core = 13% of peak CPU power.

At about 9pm, I was only running the SMP [Project 7004 - FahCore_a4.exe in Task Manager]. Configured is for 4 cores as I only wanted to donate 50% CPU. Made the change, then restarted the app. Bingo, 50% CPU.

Then, downloaded AMD Catalyst, installed it and restarted FAH. All of a sudden, there is a second FAH process [project 11293 - FahCore_16.exe inTM] running in Task Manager, consuming 13% of peak CPU. That's a full core worth of power.

Yeah, sadly, that's just the inefficiency of the AMD core. You had already mentioned you weren't using all 8 cores so I didn't point it out, but it's expected.

We've kinda lost hope it'll be improved any time soon. :(

So does that mean that the GPU is using ONLY one CPU core or is it using one CPU core AND the GPU core?
If it's just the CPU core, what's the best thing to do for PPD? Leave it as is [5 cores], or cancel the GPU projects and ramp up the SMP to 6 cores [has to be multiples of 2]?

    It's using both.

As for what to do, you'll need to check the PPD of both configs - if they're similar, drop the GPU (and while the client says multiples.of two, you can set it to 5 if you wish). If CPU + GPU gives noticeably better PPD, it's your call as to whether it's worth the additional watts.

There's one more stoopid question that I can think of, so far.

Is there a way to schedule tot utilisation of FAH. For example, I'm currently using 63% CPU. I'd like to ramp this up to 100% between 6pm and 9am and all day Saturday, Sunday.

    Whatcha reckon?

Sony to remove FAH support from PS3's tomorrow [23 Oct 2012] :(

It's amazing what a new puter will do for ye.
