Very interesting game. Story is surprisingly complex and very grim stuff (one lengthy section recounts an incident of sexual abuse), if largely rendered through text and some odd foreign language.

Only played the first few story modes: difficulty is all over the gaff (some laser patterns seem nigh on unblockable) but it's a very curious take on the mechanics. Graphics are nice, and there's seemingly loads of winks and nods to games past (Starfox seems a big influence). Overall, actually seems like an affectionate but no-holds-barred deconstruction of shmup design philosophies.

Need more time to make up my mind, but it leaves a first impression for sure. It tries something very different, although can't tell how long the novelty will hold up. Scoring system does seem interesting. Dare I suggest it actually feels a bit almost Treasure like at times?

What, you mean is overrated and only deserves a 6 out of 10 score in Edge, which some certain person will whine about ad nauseam?

    ;)

They need to do a patch to map the button layout, only 3 layouts available!

Anything by Mommy's Best Games is worth your points. Grab Shoot 1 Up for sure.

I've still not got round to buying Sine Mora. Having a lot of fun with my Gekirindan F3 cassette and Mazinger Z PCB. Stretching the Astro's legs a little from the recent run of MVS cassettes it's been dealt. :)

I need an affordable arcade stick for the PlayStation and PS2, any ideas folks? I was going to further mod a Dreamcast Arcade stick but going to revert it back to full DC functionality.

Namco PS1 stick. Not entirely at the affordable end of the scale, but why settle for less than the best? Save buying another stick further down the line. :)

I'd agree with colourblind, they're a great stick and you can get them for not too mad a price. I ended up getting boxed ones from ebay and AO at different times, wasn't looking for boxed specifically, they were "cheap" at the time. Each of them were around €60 shipped and in great condition. Actually o1s1n passed on one of the AO ones at the time. :(

There's two on ebay atm with reasonable starting bids, one from Italy looks a little rough though. Not sure if the boxed one from the UK posts here.

That'll forever be on my 'the one that got away' list :(

That cheapo Battle Garegga I posted a while back which sold before Pyong could get it is another recent one. Really should have bought that too.

Ah well, can't buy em all!

Oh and by the way, 'colourblind'? We have a new name :D

I should've bought the two at the time but couldn't justify having 3 boxed ones! I defo wanted a second one though as I was mighty impressed with the build quality. Nice stick and buttons and most importantly it's got a bit of weight to it, always a good sign. :pac:

Anyone know if one of these is worth getting as a Shump stick for the PS?
    hori_vf4.jpg

It only has three main buttons but I'm thinking it's all you need for all the Shmups I own for the system.
I don't want to jump the gun and buy something that'll turn out to be a poor choice.
My budget is around €50, including shipping, not a massive amount of money unfortunately and I have lost out on a few Namco sticks so far :(

Wouldn't be the very best, since the stick is 99%-certainly a Hori OEM (same as in a Namco) which is more Sanwa JLF than Seimitsu.
Hori buttons can be hit-and-miss with life expectancy but probably easy enough to replace (bet they're 28mm tho!).

But! It's PS2 so easy for converters; that style of Hori base is solid & well-weighted; and it's a VIRTUA FIGHTER stick so you can use it for VF5: Final Showdown when it drops this summer ;)

    Buy it.

    No need!
Got a Namco Stick for €25, not including p&p, happy days!
My worry about the VF stick is the three button layout, great for VF but lousy for Tekken and everything else that calls the triangle button into action.

Remember this simple charter next time you are in the market for a stick, buttons etc:

Sanwa = Glen Mediros. for some people, nothing will change their love for Sanwa. For others, they are like Man Utd. Sh*t, but popular because everyone thinks they are the best.

They are also useless in Champions League finals against infinitely superior teams. :D

Seimitsu = Dr. Hook, when you're in love with a beautiful button/stick (delete as appropriate), you make my pants want to get up and dance.

Like a Frank Zappa video, nobody will have a clue why you like them, but once they give it a go, that Zappa video suddenly becomes a symphony, a concerto, a magnum of glorious Technicolor wonder. An Easter basket packed with goodies of untold glorious magnitude.

Hori etc = HAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! I laughed til I stopped.

Please note, 'etc' does not include Micomsoft XE sticks. They reside in a utopia somewhere near junction 7 of the M3. Past the post office, across the road from Pat O' Cake's bakery and Patricia O' Violence's pub. Turn left at the traffic lights and its the fifth road on your right.

I saw my first ever non stick Micomsoft product on ebay Japan recently. It was some sort of scart adapter for the AES. Not cheap, was over €100.

Interesting seeing it though, has the same type of labeling as our sticks (XE -etc) Their whole line must follow the same numbering.

Oooh, here's another one of their products. Also comes in at the 'pockets lined with gold' end of the cost spectrum

Although I have been playing it via MAME recently. It's not the same as on a cab...

You don't have a pc hooked up to your cab???
It's the best way to test out a game before buying. You should look into it mate.

    1. B
    2. A
    3. T
    4. R
    5. I
    6. D
    7. E
    8. R

    :D

If you have the funds then pick it up, I think it's worth the asking price, usually a good bit cheaper than other shmups. Fabulous soundtrack too imo.

Nope. Just MAME, Laptop and an arcade stick. Bung the LCD in tate and away you go. :)

@Andrew76: Aye, Batrider is the one! Prices in Japan for the B ver have gone weird though and it's creeping out of the zone of what I'm willing to pay for it.

ESP Ra De on the other hand is looking more cheeky. I like it. :D

Guwange, Radiant Silvergun, Ikargua, Death Smiles (think that's on XBL now?)...

Speaking of XBLA, finally sat down for a full play through of Sine Mora. Pretty damn tricky at times - bullets do things I've never seen bullets do! Quite rewarding though, with fascinating mechanics, a weirdly engaging story, strong graphics and plenty of variety over its running times. The difficulty curve is crazy - that frickin' wrecking ball - but it's well worth it and running in glorious 2.35:1 :)

It's more that Seimetsu's are better for shmups because they are much tighter, the looser Sanwa's are better for fighters. I actually much prefer Sanwa buttons, far more sensitive than the Seimetsu's.
