You can get them in Dunnes too, how are you cooking them?

Pot stewish type of thing, slowly cooked:confused: haven't thought about it really.

Also no dunnes or tesco where I am lucky to have a lidl!

I think it's nearly done, I've started prepairing the jar it's a kilner jar, so cute!

Last minute realised I've no idea where my sieve is and I can't find it anywhere:rolleyes: Got it in with most of the bits out.

    Hello everyone!
I’ve been following this thread since the start (well, I’m actually a long-time lurker on H&F and N&D).
I started on the primal/paleo buzz around February last year.
I had tried low-carb to begin with, starting around November 2010, but I tried to do it while staying low-fat.
It took me a loooong time to come around to the “fat is good” notion! I is stubborn.
Anyhow, I felt brutal and in the end I got so rundown that I got quite sick.

So, thanks to boards, I starting reading more and more about primal/paleo eating.
And I’ve never felt better since starting to eat this way.
I’ve had a couple of lapses, where I start to veer off course a bit…20% becomes 30…becomes 40.
But it’s typically easy enough to spot and put a halt on it.

Which is why I’ve now started a Whole30 – my first one actually.
    I started on Sunday…ish
I stuck a print-out of the guidelines on the fridge and even though it said very clearly “no butter”,
I kept thinking “nah, butter is awesome, they can’t mean that, no butter?”.
By Monday evening, it had sunk it (please refer to above “I is stubborn” statement).
So the butter is put away and the coconut oil is out and I’m good to go (I’ll be back, oh buttery eggs)

Reason for it – new county, new house, new job – my good eating got a little lost in the past month.
And maybe because it’s Spring and why the hell not do something to make myself feel fantastic

Hurray we can be whole30 buddies, lotwan & I started Sunday too. But I'm going to be a stickler and say you have to count your first butter free day as day 1!
You could make ghee from the butter you have at home rather than it going to waste.

Whole30 will have an online discussion forum from Monday which should be good.

    Welcome to the thread.

ETA with important sausage update! - I have found one that doesn't contain crumb etc - M&S 97%pork - 6 in a pack and 2 packs for €7.
I also picked up some venison steaks - will be my first time.

Strictly speaking I'm on Day 8 of my 2nd Whole30 but I consciously decided to do it on Sunday so I'll count from then. On Day 4 the last time I was focused to the minutest detail about what I could, should and would eat. Now I just eat what I eat and it is all Whole30 anyway LOL

Vooice... Welcome to the thread & to your first W30 :-) I have to agree with DCD that you have to start counting from your first butter free day. But go ahead and make ghee. I am using it these days but I'm yet to make my butter mushrooms.

I put paleo into my online dating profile as an interest. LOL

Just thought I'd add my story

long time IBS sufferer....8 days ago after a very bad IBS reoccurrence I decided on going gluten free / paleo...the difference, in a short space of time, has been OUTSTANDING. I have much more energy, sleeping much better, no longer bloated after meals, toilet issues gone.

I wish I was aware of this type of diet years ago. Read Rob Wolfe's book last week and flying through Wheat Belly at the moment.

    An incredible turnaround.

That if friggin brilliant, thrilled for you! What a relief to be free from those symptoms.

So W30, day 4. family trip to the cinema, usually I'd enjoy my Butlers cappucinno and 70% chocolate...but instead I brought my own treat - big bottle of water with lemon & mint (I make ice-cubes with fresh mint & lemon stuck in, no waste :)) and a tub of sliced banana & frozen blueberries with coconut milk.
Oh and then I fell asleep during the film
Speaking of sleep, hows' the coffee/sleep experiment going Lotwan. I have WAY cut back on my coffee but I always sleep well anyway (prob because dd didn't sleep through till she was 3.5!)

Re the coconut milk I really like the Thai Gold brand. I have found the easiest way to mix it when it is seperated in the can is to dump the lot (scraping out the can well) into a tupperware pot or sim (I use an old soup pot) and give it a great big shake. Also good for using it over a few days.

First venison experience was a let-down I expected a strong gamey flavour but it was less flavourful than beef imo, so won't be bothering with that again.

You might want to think about whether fruit with coconut milk is sex with your pants on. Also fruit should be eaten with protein, not just fat.

I'm sleeping better now that I am without coffee & Diet Coke but better than that the fat loss has resumed :-)

If I did I wouldn't have eaten it.

    Why?

Because it is believed to lessen the insulin spike caused by the fruit.

Couldn't face eggs today so I had some baked salmon for breakfast. It was surprisingly lovely!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 52 ✭✭Vooice

Thanks very much for the welcome!
I’m not missing the butter yet, I mainly had it in my eggs and I’m enjoying the coconutty change for the mo.

I do have some unsalted butter in the fridge, might give ghee a go
….and if only to make me stop morphing into Beavis/Butthead when I say it (huh huh huh ghee!)

I love blueberries in the cinema! Great for that hand-to-mouth motion, to replace popcorn.
Only fresh mind – frozen stains like a mother – I’d come out like the Joker.

Anyways, already feeling better - I actually feel like exercising.
The two always go hand-in-hand for me, if one starts to get bad, the other follows.

    Sounds great!
Actually a smoked salmon omelette would be lovely for breakfast ...
How are you feeling these days after the change in diet?

I just finished the last of my breakfast loaf (well I have 3 portions frozen so I can take a break from it). I'm going to try this one next
    http://freerangecrossfit.com/2012/supreme-egg-loaf/
with some of the sausages I got yesterday. Will have to wait till my egg man comes tomorrow though - got 2 dozen last friday & still had to top up from Aldi!

Maybe we should look in to the whole chickens thing Lotwan....there are 2 dogs next door though, would they go mental barking?

Sorry missed your post. I have a photo of my ghee if you'd like to see it? Gnarf.

Beautiful sunny day. Going to take my cup of cinnamon coffee outside I think, get some bit d :)
Feeling pretty great today, had a run and Pilates class, a tasty lunch and am feeling skinny as heck!

I know lots of people with chickens and dogs with no issues. It all depends on the size of your garden.

At the moment the 3 of us are getting through the best part of 5 dozen eggs a week!

The fish van will be in town tomorrow. I might go in and treat myself to some salmon :-)

Dogs will actually deter foxes away from the chickens.

Hi there, this is a great thread. I'm so glad you started it.

I'm definitely feeling better but have been very tired the last few days. I have only really had a proper breakfast on those days and bits of things during the rest of the day. I need to be more organised as far as planning meals and bulk cooking goes - that just seems to get pushed down the list everyday. Ahh stress, I feel like benny hill running around that tree in fast forward.

Have a lot of college work on and of course the broken sleep every night doesn't help. Will be finished my exams in 5 weeks so hopefully things will settle down then.

I have a fillet steak and some pork mince in the fridge that I need to do something with today.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,934 ✭✭✭Dotcomdolly

You could use the mince to do an egg loaf type thing - would be good for lunch too with a big salad with avocado?
Fillet steak, fried onions & mushrooms, big rocket salad. NYOM!
As the book says "I don't know how she does it", being a new mum is hard enough without studying on top, fair play!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 608 ✭✭✭LoTwan

My go to for mince is chilli. It freezes really well & we eat it a few times a week :-)

I don't observe a fast on GF but I got salmon with 30% off in Aldi so we are having fish or lunch :-)

I was in my butchers the other day & he was talking about the pork he was prepping for me. His comment was "this pastured pork is much nicer than that shed rubbish". I had to laugh because 6 months ago I wouldn't have noticed the difference LOL

What, that is a single serving?

    LOL

It was good, need more meat in it though.
Dinner was good - lamb gigot chops with herbs & garlic, roasted (in ghee) carrots & green salad.

I'm feeling very meh about food this week. I eat when I'm hungry but I'm not putting much effort into what I'm eating.

I'm going to Gourmet Burger for dinner tomorrow :-). I must take a look at the menu & see what I can eat.

    .

Yes I'm the same. Also had 2 potatoes today and some dark and milk chocolate. Feel gross now. Motivation is low. I need to majorly up the veg intake this week.

    Yuck.

I'm fortunate that feeling meh about food at the moment means I am pure paleo. Today for example was

Late breakfast: 4 egg, chorizo, spinach & onion omelette
Early dinner: chicken, carrot & roasted parsnip.
    Water, tea and 1 coffee.

I was hungry when my breakfast and dinner were ready, not at any other time.

DCD... How is your W30? I'm not overly thinking about it this time around :-)

Not bad thanks, really wanted a glass of wine the other other evening, but didn't miss chocolate today, or any other day, at all.
The no scales is really hard for me but I am fighting it.
Meals today were - breakfast egg loaf & tomato salad, rocket salad with smoked salmon & avocado, then bolognese over salad & courgette "pasta". I have a few challenging events coming up though :(
Looking fwd to the new whole30 forum tomorrow!
