A mile from Patrick St is not nearly as bad as the dublin road. The wires are more direct on the northside than on the southside where they appear to take a very awkward route to get there. I know of one line which was on Rathmullan road, little more than a 1km walk to the exchange but the line length was nearly 3km long!

You should check the next generation broadband map on the eircom site. It looks like most of the dublin road area will get the upgrade soon, while here in grange rath we'll be left out in the cold. So the tables could change soon enough.
Given the distances involved, DSL users in Five Oaks, Stameen, Beaubec, Roschoill and the parts of Wheaton Hall furthest from the Dublin Road will not be likely to see any performance improvement from the change to decade-old generation* broadband.

When I switched to Digiweb's decade-old generation broadband* package yesterday, was told I'll get 2Mb/s. I'm currently getting less than 1.5Mb/s where I used to get 2Mb/s.

I don't expect the current performance to change for the better. I've heard reports of speed and sync stability worsening on the move to ADSL2/2+.

*sorry, I refuse to call this "next generation broadband". Next-generation broadband is fibre to the home, not fibre somewhere along the backhaul.

i live on the town in drogheda so it is still a bit from the exchange in patrick street proberly 1.6km. and its only 60 a month and includes 24mb no cap , unlimited local and nat calls on/off peak. plus 30 min mobile free. :)

Nice that you are getting reasonable speeds, but this thread is about broadband in the most poorly served part of town, the Dublin Road, particularly the parts of it furthest from the town.

Whether they are giving you 2 mbps or not is checked by looking at the router's reported speed. Some of that 2 mb/s capacity is used for maintenance functions and making sure the right data goes to the right place etc. A speed test will never get the reported speed by the modem because of that.

I've noticed that my speed (In Grange Rath, with Eircom) has increased drastically over the last few weeks. Things which used to take 2 hours to download now are downloading in 15 minutes. Only problem is now when my phone rings, I lose my connection. That used to happen but I got a filter on my phoneline and it fixed it, but it seems to have started back up again now :/

Anyone able to disect those results for me? :P

Hmmm... Where did you get the filters? They may be dodgy. Eircom will send you out more filters if you don't have any.

Do you have everything filtered that connects to the line, except the modem? I.e. Sky boxes?

Nope. There's two plug in places in the house. Modem is in one unfiltered, phone is in the other filtered. The old filter worked for about two years and I bought a new one in Harvey Normans yesterday and its not working either :/

The connection only goes when the phone is called or you call someone? Could you plug out both the phone and filter, reset the modem and then check the DSL line stats and post them here? This is all a little off topic but it shouldn't be too hard to see what's going on.

Any chance of grabbing a different phone to see how that works out?

If you swapped the modem and phone (with its filter) between the two sockets, does it make a difference to stability?

Yes, I'm aware of TCP overhead and other housekeeping traffic. However, a speed test is fairly indicative. Add 10% and my current connection is still way below acceptable in this day and age.

Yeah it is off top speed, but the max would be about 1.65 mbps net and 1.34 is not far enough off that limit for a 2048/256 connection to make specific conclusions. Can you post the line speed and stats from the modem, it would help clarify if the problem is line quality or a general eircom-related matter.

Some friends and family I know are also connected to the Patrick St. exchange and are limited by eircom to 1 mbit because of distance (even if the line can take more or if the line needs a lower limit). Working with connections at less than 2 mbps is a pain in fairness, unless you have the connection to yourself within a house and even that's not ideal.

i am in five oaks and when eircom turned me up to an "8mg line" my speed went down when i rang them they turned me down to a 2mg line and igot better throughput hope this is a help

Can you post the line speed and stats from the modem
/usr/sbin/adslctl: ADSL driver and PHY status
    Status: ShowtimeRetrain Reason: 8000
Channel: INTR, Upstream rate = 256 Kbps, Downstream rate = 1568 Kbps
    Link Power State: L0
    Mode: G.DMT
    Channel: Interleave
    Trellis: ON
    Line Status: No Defect
    Training Status: Showtime
    Down Up
    SNR (dB): 5.6 20.0
    Attn(dB): 63.5 31.5
    Pwr(dBm): 16.9 11.6
    Max(Kbps): 1600 776
    Rate (Kbps): 1568 256
, it would help clarify if the problem is line quality or a general eircom-related matter.
It is a line quality issue, without a doubt. I'm pretty sure the copper between here and Patrick Street has deteriorated significantly in the past three years. That and the distance from Patrick Street combine to make the line quality just this side of utterly lousy. A year or so ago, I was getting a Max(Kbps) of over 2200. Now it is down to 1600.

What?! Yeah do post more on this when you get a chance. I don't know how that is possible, based on what I know before.

hey im living on the duleek road in drogheda, im on the donore exchange and the exchange was never upgraded for next generation broadband so i can only get up 8 meg with vodafone but im lucky to get 1 meg most days, today someone from utv called to me and told me that he could offer me up 24 meg broadband on my line some new technology there using at the exchange lcc i think, but he siad u have to be already with vodafone or eircom to get it that they have a deal made with them over the lines, as far as i thought it didnt make a diffrence once there still using the old lines you couldnt get anything that fast? anyone know more about this?? i also asked him could you sign up online and he said no that they have only started doing this in the last few weeks?? sounds a bit fishy to me.....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,248 ✭✭✭lucernarian

You're lucky to get 1 meg?? You should be getting much more than that. Are you sure you're reporting the right speed? Your router's webpage will give you the DSL connection's speed and statistics and maybe you could post those here?

UTV rep called to me this evening. He couldnt have timed it better. I was just about to ring vodafone to cancelled my mobile broadband in a view to getting an 8mb Eircom line in in the next couple of weeks. I intended committing to a 12 month contract tomorrow.

The rep offered a 24mb line, admitted it would be 18mb realistically, 20gb allowance for 35 euro a month. There was also a 50 euro line setup fee as there has never been a line into the house. I never questioned whether the 35 euro included line rental.....Am i missing something or is it just a very good deal???

The house is located on the old slane road, on the Mell side of Drogheda.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,248 ✭✭✭lucernarian

Mell would get far better speeds than the Dublin Road area alright.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4 shaneb1983

i signed up for a up to 24 mb unlimited traffic for 45 a month with utv, rang utv to confirm this today as i cant even get next generation on my line, they said that my phone line can only take up to 6 meg, but yet vodafone told me i have an 8 meg connection? i know someone else utv called to during the week they offered him a completly diffrent package as well, i think someones trying to get there commision up

Hard to know, doesnt sound great when they are offering people different different packages.

The rep is calling back tomorrow evening. Think it would be a bit of a punt.

Probably safer just to go with Eircom......24mb though!!!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 199 ✭✭ilovespudss

Just looked at utv website there....think the price he gave me must have excluded line rental. There is a package there for 60 a month 24mb line but a 30 GB limit....Not good when you dont trust them already.

I'd say I'm fairly close to you and the best I can get on the Eircom 12MB is

    DownStream Connection Speed 7616 kbps
    UpStream Connection Speed 672 kbps

That's with an Eircom guy beside me who sorted the line out. I'd be interested to see how you get on.

They will tell you that. Both Vodafone and Eircom told me I can get 8 meg connection, but my phoneline can barely handle 2.5 mbps. I've asked them to set it to 3 mbps, any faster, the connection drops every few minutes! This is in Wheaton Hall. So much for IT focus for the recovery of the country..! :(

I would be interested to see the results of this. Im in wheaton Hall, had the UTV rep at my door too. I called his bluff saying there was no way the lines in wheaton hall could get those kind of speeds. He claimed UTV have a new LLU exchange but I would be very suprised if we can get anything over 5mb up here.

Please let us know how you get on, I'm going with 3mb max in 5 oaks.

This particular UTV Internet guy is getting around. He called to me today, and according to him the estate is wired up with fiber cables up to the local exchanges (small boxes withing the estate). This network was so far unused for whatever reason, and according to him UTV Internet now has access to it, and exclusivity for it for next 5 years. According to him the exchange box for this house is just around the corner from the cud-de-sac, so he's adamant that I would get proper speeds (rather than the puny 2 mbps I currently get from Vodafone). Approximately 35 or so for per month including free off-peak local and UK/Ireland calls with 20 gb download cap.

Fine-prints include things like €25 per month for the rest of contract period. If you want the free modem (nectar?) it's €9.95 postage. Usual 14 days cooling off period. They are tad bit unprofessional, getting me to sign papers without leaving as much as basic print of terms and conditions.

Now, I am desperate for faster internet, so I've signed up for it. I really really really hope this turns out to be a real deal..! I'll update progress as and when..!

Really keen to know how this develops, ferpur.

There's a large discussion on eircom's FTTC (fiber to the cabinet) and FTH (fiber to home) rollout projects here, and that project is still in progress from what I can gather. I really want this UTV Internet deal to be real, but.. fingers crossed!

I would love to think its true to but judging by how the sales rep reacted when I confronted him and he completely backed off, I would say this is too good to be true. My experience from door to door sales reps is that they will say anything for a sale. It will never come back to bite them anyway whether you get the 24mb or 1mb. Be great if I was wrong though.

Drogheda will have FTTC by end of this year, from Eircom, as its currently in phase 2 of the fiber project, until then the dublin road area will not have any decent broadband speeds. I have spoken with a senior manager in eircom who tells me work will start soon on this.

i have a few properties around Drogheda, and i was working in one last week in wheaton hall doing some painting, when a chap from UTV called in, a young guy about 20-24 selling utv broadband, and he started off by saying that Wheaton hall was now cabled up to the new exchange, up the road, ( i assume that he was talking about CLXA grange rath exchange)

i told him that that was a crock, as wheaton hall was built around 1993, and the phone cables are old and not so good quality wise, and too far from local exchange for decent speeds above 4mb.

when i questioned him, and told him the above, he backed off, and said, "i didnt know that", so obviously a sales pitch was being spun to people he called to, you havent a chance in hell of getting 20mb in wheaton hall at the minute, as your line goes back to DBC! on Patrick st.
