You need to apply to Revenue for a TAN number. This involves having a certain amount of money held as a deposit for VRT by Revenue.

When you have it, you can only use them on vehicles that are for business use, between the hours of 7am (I think) and 10pm Monday to Saturday. They do not apply on Sundays.

The following is required to apply for trade plates:
    Form R700 must be completed.
Garage Code must be given, this code is obtained from VRU, Shannon by the motor trader/repairer.
V.A.T number must be included on the form
Rate Account number or Planning permission number and date permission granted
Application must be accompanied by Irish certificate of insurance (copy of cert is not acceptable) and appropriate fee.

Garage code and tan number aren't the same thing I think

Add to this, I believe the Gardai do a check on your premises also, before approving the issuing of the trade plates.

Any more info on the rates / planning permission ? Is it either one of the two, or must you have both ? How do you go about paying rates on a previously non-commercial premises ? Is it just a matter of ringing the council and asking to take your money ? Thanks in advance for any guidance on this.

(@op, apologies if I'm highjacking your thread, but I guess you'll be interested in the answers also !)

You dont need to hold any money to have a tan no. I just top up the account when ever i need to register something. When i sold imports it was all paid with cheques.

You need to have a rates valuation to get a garage code.
Once you have this then you can apply to your local authority for plates and they will send out someone to inspect premises.

AFAIK you need to apply for planning permission to change the status of a building.

They look for rates valuation, but not having it doesn't always kill your application.

    By you or someone else?

There will be outstanding rates and could be planning/zoning issues and the kicker Health & Safety violations which will affect insurance.

TBH the internet isn't the place to find out about this you need to contact your solicitor as they are just the possible issues which I can think of and who knows how many I can't.
