How does one identify lime render?

1830's stone cottage, exterior rendered at some point in the past. Ihave removed several old layers of paint back to the render. Is there some characteristic of lime render that would confirm whether it is that or plain cement based stuff? I need to prep walls for painting hence the need to identify. Thanks all. TT
