I was looking at this one yesterday:

    http://www.fujibikes.com/bike/details/roubaix-20-usa2

Fuji Roubaix 2.0 for €999. Is it a good bike for the money?

No idea sorry but have added it anyway to the list thanks. They all seem to have similar enough details and I'm guessing it's the equivalent of comparing a Mondeo with a Passat with an Insignia with a Mazda5 etc etc!?

That's the exact conclusion I came to when buying a new bike, no matter what your budget, most brands will have a bike that falls into your range, and they will all have a pretty identical spec, give or take, so at the end of the day it really comes down to frame fit/aesthetic preference.

No probs. That's a good list you are putting together there and handy for people to reference.

Reading through the various threads I gather I should be looking for a carbon fork, reasonable wheels and 105 or tiagra gears/brakes. Am I right in saying most bikes around that price have some combination of the above so you may as well pick based on colour or something random!?

Ok, noob to road bikes myself and will be reading this thread in detail again towards the end of the year when I plan on buying a new bike. For a first road bike I picked up a second hand bike, and started mucking about with it to get what I was after. I think the whole 105 vs tiagra thing is over emphasised for those new to road bikes. I'd focus way more on goodness of fit, relaxed vs aggressive geometry, having a wide enough gear range for the terrain your dealing with, comfy saddle, good wheels etc... I suspect the difference between good and very good drive train components is of more benefit to experienced cyclists than beginners, that and bragging rights of course.

FWIW, you could also just about get a ribble carbon bike for your grand.

    Great thread BTW!

I just enquired with them day before yesterday and got a reply yesterday. Basically if you go through the process of ordering on their site then on the final page you can select payment method - if you choose "Pre Payment" (or something like that) then they'll actually issue you with a soft-copy invoice to your email address. I think this is sufficient for an employer assuming they're happy to deal with Canyon.

They've a couple of weeks order time which is plenty to get an invoice and have it paid into their account (bank details are on their FAQ). Going to order this evening. Thanks again.

Very jealous, I'm not quite ready to order yet! Look forward to hearing how you find it in the flesh (metal!)! :)

Just a point to note. If you employer pays €1000 to Canyon by Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) you have to pay the balance remaining (e.g. for delivery) by EFT also. I tried to pay the balance by plastic-tastic but they said they can't accept part payment by cc.

Yeah, great thread. Just what I was looking for meself.

I'm just off the phone there with cycleways and they say they have the specialized allez elite, tiagra, for 1029, which if correct is a good price.

edit - it's accurate alright. That's 100 quid less than other bike shops around have advertised.

Wiggle have some Wiliers reduced to under a grand, seems to be slight differences in spec between the black and white versions. I'm almost certain the fork is carbon, despite what the bumpf says, it looks the same as the one on my Escape.

Thanks added to the (ever-growing!) list. Most of the main specs seemed to be the same on each I think.

Ask your employer to pay the full amount and you can then give your employer a cheque for the excess over €1,000. I did this recently without any hassle but of course it depends how flexible your employer is.

Canyon have been great to deal with so far. ;)

Needed to make a few changes to my original order as I forgot to put the Company name in as the purchaser for invoice purposes under the "Pre Pay" option.

They changed and emailed me a new invoice in under 24 hours.

Anyone have any thoughts on the Boardman Road Team (the one around € 1,150) versus Canyon Roadlite 6.0 spec? Having some difficulties sorting out electronic payment to Canyon and might (although not sure yet) have to consider local supplier. With an Axa discount taken into account the Boardman works out same price with same groupset and wheels. It seems to be a little heavier, but I'm guessing 300-400g is going to make zero difference to a non-racing beginner? Anything else important I should be considering?

The Wiliers I mentioned earlier in this thread are nearly all gone, just Large left in the white, but more money off, and another 10% off til tomorrow.

Savage bike for €700. I'm sorely tempted myself, but I think it's just a bit too big for me..

There is no such thing as a "bike to work registered bike shop in Ireland"

Check the FAQ sticky for a link to the BTW megathread, but bikes can be purchased anywhere subject to any restrictions imposed by your emplyer
