Why didn't they at least leave one store in Dublin and Cork open, dont tell me at least one store in capitals like those were not making money...

The opportunity for another Irish founded and run games retailer is now there for the taking. Like a hybrid between Forbidden planet and GAME and run by people who actually like and know the medium. Oh and include retro stuff and arcade machines too. My dream shop...

It does show him in a bad light as he is complaining about GAME not honouring another companies warranty and then he complains about them running out of stock. The last part makes no sense to me so I don't know if it's valid or not.

Assuming he bought the PS3 from Game (and assuming he was returning it after 10 months because it was faulty), the contract is with them and not Sony, so they do have to honour the warranty and repair/replace/refund. (or is there something I'm missing?)

A hybrid of Game and Forbidden planet. Eugh *shivers* I don't want pompous pricks selling me overpriced game imports and Retro stuff. I would like a more local based Retro store than an international chain.

True. I may have misread or assumed the worse in this situation.

I did buy it out of game in blanch and when they ran out of the 60 gigs I asked them nicely if they could give a better console. They told me straight out no.Everyone knew this day was coming

That would be my I understanding as well, any warranty/guarantee is an addition to not a replacement of you your basic consumer rights and certainly doesn't allow a retailer to completely abdicate their responsibilities under the Sale of Goods act.

Game on Patrick st in Cork

Passed it this morning, was in there Sunday and a guy was buying a preowned xbox, fair enough but then he came out with ''do you supply console insurance'' i wanted to tell the customer but i was in shock to see the prick manager take his €30 knowing well it was dead money. Delighted to see Game gone.

Some disgruntled employees seem to be protesting over there redunances now

That would mean maintaining a supply chain and head office etc. This would lose even more money.

    Viva la Steam!

While I can't comment on the treatment you received individually the options were because SONY discontinued the 60Gb was:

    40Gb and a bit of a refund
Swap a new 60Gb for a pre-owned one - because this was the only way to get another 60Gb
    80Gb and pay the extra

Stores used to handle this politely in the majority of cases. However if you acted like a prick it's likely you'd be treated like one - people can only make their own conclusions on how you've conducted yourself on this one.

Edit: The other option was for the retailer to return it to Sony and the customer be without the console which they are allowed to do. Under the Act the retailer has a reasonable time to rectify the fault.

The trouble is that what sort of price do you think such a company would have to sell games at? GAME was a massive company with bulk buying power and still couldn't get the margins to work.

Thats the thing they had no fat ps3 in.All they had was the slim ones.

Its resold from Alliaz which last time I checked was still going strong. Maybe you should educate yourself a bit.

EDIT And the managers didnt get told until yesterday.

In that case they should have refunded the value and sold you the closest console - which may have meant paying a bit more or getting a partial refund if it was a lower model. Alternatively they should have taken it off you and got one sent in from somewhere else. All options where available at a company level - cant comment on what happened in your particualar situation.

Haha brilliant. Last thing I'd expect was the Monaghan boys to be featured on Eurogamer!

Surprise surprise, the local politician shuffles his way into the picture  As much as I sympathise with those who have lost their jobs - it has happened me and it's never fun - it's hard to avoid the reality that Bricks n' Mortar Game stores are becoming increasingly irrelevant in this day and age, and wouldn't argue that they stay open if they're turning in a loss. It was only a matter of time given the direction & speed the market is heading in; and given the consistently bad, anti-consumer practices many of these stores engaged in makes me ... well, happy they're being wound up.

An opportunity to compete against a host of other players happily loss leading with deep pockets to do so. The opportunity to be perceived as ripping people off when trying to retail the stock at any kind of sustainable price point. And not forgetting the shirnking market, threat to pre owned sales, digital distribution etc - Some opportunity that :)

GAME might not always have been the best on prices but they were certainly the shop I preferred. Nice shops and comfortable to have browse. Didn't always have the most knowledgable but they beat the others hands down.

You just gave us a number of reasons why they didn't beat the others hands down...

And regarding your other point, no. GAME should have honoured the warranty.

Sure there was a independent games store opened just opposite HMV on Grafton street just before Christmas and it folded only after a few months. They could not compete on price for new titles, and there wasn't the market for their retro consoles and games to support it.

3D games? That was horrendously over priced.

:) They were perceived as such but those were the prices publishers were expecting retailers to sell at (and costing them accordingly)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,166 ✭✭✭Beefy78

Exactly. The problem is that people have an expectation now of a price that they should be being charged and the realities are that there's no way that those expecations can be met without a company having huge mass-buying power and then still selling as a loss-leader.

When there's no bricks and mortar game stores and the only choice is between the supermarkets, websites like Play & Amazon and digital distribution, prices are only going to go one way - particularly if publishers have managed to gut the pre-owned market. This is terrible news for consumers.

  • Site Banned Posts: 1,678 ✭✭✭Andy!!

Dunno if I'd agree with that, even their preowned retro stuff, and the paraphernalia, was overpriced. Much more than they'd go for on t'internet.

They were over priced. It was 35 euro for crisis core on PSP, 50 euro for final fantasy XII on PS2!

Unless you know what their cost price was it's difficult for you to say that they were over-priced.

I suggest reading some of Gamesnash.ie: Pat's posts earlier in this thread for an insight into the reality of the pricing structure of these stores.

I work in a HMV. Why would you pay 35 for one game, when Game themselves were selling the game in question for 11.99?
