Credit cards allow you to spend money that you don't have yet. Visa debit isn't available in the two main Irish banks.

There's loads options though, prepaid credit card is technically a debit card with a 16 digit number, dead handy, would rather use it than my Visa CC. No bills and it's just the way I like it!

I looked into the prepay ones before but the extra charges seem a tad ridiculous one some of them. Didnt like the look of some which stuck on a huge chunk for ordering on sites from abroad...

Yep that's the biggest drawback with using a debit card. I do tend to use my debit card more though, hate having extra bill coming in, I've enough of them!

you are also entitled to a refund if u purchase items using a debit card and don't receive them this works for registered business in ireland, the business or banks (if the business has been put into administration) have to reinburse you.

buying online from abroad however may be a different story.

In a situation like that ^ it's fine.

For those that don't need one for business, you're only spending money you don't have, which is not going to end well. I've a visa debit card which does everything a credit card can do - but with money that is mine. I never have owned a credit card, nor will I.

All rubbish, Your clearly bad with money if thats the case.

Give a credit card to a tool, you will get toolish things done with it.

(im not calling you a tool btw)

The government tax on them is designed to stifle e-commerce

can I avoid this if I get a foreign credit card or 3V or some such ?

credit cards are handy when buying over the interweb , particularly flights

I treat mine like a debit card put money on it once I spend on it. It is dead handy as I spend a good bit of time abroad and the Laser doesn't work.

I agree some people cannot manage them but like everything if used wisely they are a handy thing to have. I use it for booking flights, hotels and that and it comes in extremely handy in that regard.

I always keep a positive balance on mine. I essentially use my debit and credit cards in the same way. A lot of people just shouldn't be let near a credit card, let alone a bank loan.

Make sure you don't lose the card (obviously good advice anyway :) ) but especially if you keep a positive balance on a credit card - the bank usually have in the small print that they are not liable for any credit balance on the card if it is lost or stolen.

Even though credit is the new taboo word, people have to realise credit is vital to a correctly functioning economy. Without credit, growth is impossible.

i cut mine up a few years ago cos i ran up a massive bill. But ya cant buy anything online without it. So got another one about 6 months ago. They straight up gave up a 1500 limit. Rang them up and told them to reduce that to 500 and now i just book hotels, or buy music on iTunes or stuff i don't need with it. But will always pay it off with online banking straight away.

Have a Visa Debit, nearly got a CC but thankfully this came in just in time (I am bad enough with money, but getting better!). They're extremely handy, and i'm nearly an internet shopper altogether now.

Looked at the PTSB site, and they say that they may be able to help recover the money, but doesn't go into detail...

If you need to hire a car, either here or abroad they wont take visa debit cards, only a credit card.

Credit cards are great as long as you pay them back in full every month, which I do.

  • Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 18,100 Mod ✭✭✭✭ixoy

Yes, because they're very handy for purchasing items online from any site as all sites would support the main credit cards. They also offer a fairly good degree of protection that debit cards may not.

I'm also capable of managing my money so it's paid off on time, without ever being charged interest. It's really not that difficult if you've got even a modicum of self control.

I think some people would rather blame the temptation the cards offer for their woes rather than accept they are bad with money...

This, I dont blame credit card because I owe money on it, I used it because I had to and it was easier, I used to be really good with it, paying off what I just bought instantly so there was never more than a few quid on it, now there's a chunk on it because i was paying stupid money in rent the past few months but that'll change soon.

I'm at a loss to understand what people find 'stupid' or 'dangerous' about them.

If you think that, you should never be let near one anyway as clearly you've no common sense!

say for example you have a credit card with €1000 limit and you have the €0 balance. now you want to buy a laptop for €1500. can you put €1000 on it and then have a temporarly limit of €2000 or iwll it just not work? do i need the bigger credit limit.

That will work fine. If the limit is 1000 and you want to buy a laptop for 1500 the just put 500 in it.

I am surprised that the issue of miss sold credit card PPI insurance has not been tackled in this country as it has been in the UK. Thousands have been ripped off in this country by the banks on this scam and nothing has been done by the governments / courts so far.

if you're bad with money/credit, then yes it would be

i have a couple and the balances are cleared each month, or second month
it's just a convenience, even though i have the visa debit as well

Agreed, I have a credit card, the balance is 0.00

    Amazing that.

Travelling is much simpler with a credit card.

I can't understand being vehemently against having a CC, unless you can't trust yourself with money, which is a much wider issue.

People pay interest on credit cards?

With visa debit you can do nearly as much as you can with a credit card.

So how many Irish banks have visa debit cards now?

Tonight I'll be owed money on my card, I'm such an r-tard eh?

That should be fine, they're getting scabby with the credit limits lately. I don't know about here but in Britain they were charging "maintenance" fees if you paid in more than you owed. I've done it a few times and never gotten charged though.

What sort of protection do you have if say you book a hotel with 1800hotels.com and they go bust or buy a sofa from sofaking and he closes before it's delivered?

With a credit card its trivially easy to get the money back.

Much of that protection is extended to Visa Debit cards although it. An Gary by banks.

I travel a lot and need cards (even though I'm now spending my own money) to secure hotel and car rental bookings. I have EUR, GBP and USD cards to minimise forex leakage.

Even if I didn't travel or want to borrow money, one of my cards (one I use most) gives 1% of my spend to charity which has amounted to a fair few thousand over the years (much fundEd by work expenses).

    Warm fuzzy feelings.

That will work fine. If the limit is 1000 and you want to buy a laptop for 1500 the just put 500 in it.

Depends on the card and issuer. Doesn't always work.

I was advised by my bank to use a credit rather than a debit card for online shopping. The insurance/protection is better if it doesn't work out - fruad/seller goes bust.

Also, they don't have a card that is directly linked to your bank account (but of course this could be small consolation for someone with a large credit limit).

Credit cards are really handy if you've a bit of common sense. I've used one for the last 7-8 years, always paid the bill in full on time and have never had any issues whatsoever.

It's people who over spend and only pay off a portion of the bill are the problem and shouldn't be let near them.

So what protection do debit transactions get? Do people use paypal?
If a credit card allowed for more protection and people aren't silly with their money then they are fine. I like my debit as it's just taking money out of my acc, don't have to deal with it ever.
