Aggressive Selling in shops

This is starting to drive me crazy.

I was in a butchers in Waterford last week, I go here every week to get my meat. I have a list and know exactly what I want to buy, after preparing my order the sale person tried to sell me loads of stuff from flavoured sausages to relish, I was very surprised with the forceful way this was done.

Then later on I went to xtravision and got a dvd, only to be asked 3 times did I want the popcorn and drink deal, when I said no she said "are you sure". This is starting to p*ss me off.

I cant go anywhere now without shops trying to sell you something you don't want, I expect it in some large stores and fast food outlets but in a bloody butchers??
I understand that the have a business to run, but this puts me off going back.

Is it me or does anyone else notice this?

It's called "upselling" and yeah, I notice staff doing it a lot more in places too.

Been going on for years. "Do you want disk protection with that?", "Like our points card?", "Would you like a condom with that?" (Oh, wait that's the ad).

But yeah just do what 99% of us do. "No. Thanks".

One assertive response will put an end to it.

It's called upselling or pushing sales. Most of the time it is mandatory for retail staff to do. Doubt they'd really care if you wanted lotto/clubcard/phone credit etc along with your purchase. They're just doing their job.

Used to work in Game Stop and hated having to do this. I'd get yelled at if I didn't, it feels sleazy. I'd prefer just to give them a leaflet with the info and let a customer make their mind up.

Can't go anywhere now? Shops have always done this, it's their job (along with advertising) to make you want stuff while you're inside.

    Mobile service providers are worst...

    - I checked your payment history and decided that you better off with bill pay!!!
    - I dont want it...
    - but you wil save around 10-20eu per month?!?!
    -I don't want it...
    - but why?! It's so much better for you! It will save you money!!
    - i don't like to have another bill in the end of the month.
    - but it is cheaper?!
    - I don't want it...
    - think about it, it is way cheaper and you can get out of contract any time!!
    - peep peep peep

As someone who trained staff on upselling/cross selling for a long time, I feel someway responsible. I do apologise. Would you be interested in becoming a subscriber to boards, to ensure that the community benefits from your money?

When I worked in retail, and the sales started going south, they got in some 'experts' and we had to attend classes to teach us how to 'upsell'. The psychology behind it seems a little warped, and for the most part I sensed that the majority of people I tried it on were more annoyed than anything else. Best thing to help sales is give good customer service, and I think this is the opposite of that. I eventually only did it when I knew my boss was around.
    first world problems eh ?

I find the 'first world problems' type of response more annoying than up-selling. Who would've thought?

Here is a novel idea, it may not work but it;s worth a shot.

I worked in a few shops years ago one of them xtravision and the orders constantly came down to be more forward when upselling.

You know yourself what a person wants and will possibly buy. I hated it and never did it when the boss wasnt around, had words with management over it a couple of times because more often than not you just piss customers off. But the shirts at the top dont have one clue when it comes to that and think badgering enough customers will result in x amount of profit and send down the word to force staff to do it.

I can imagine with things as bad as they are now there is huge pressure on staff to try and force a sell.

Of all the million stupid things that annoy me OP, this is not one of them.

Just say 'I'm fine, thanks' and it'll all be grand. Trust me.

This is driving me nut too. I`d like to give my business to local small shops but they pounce on you the minute you come in, pull out every single thing, insist that it can be altered/ordered/whatever. They seem to be trying to force or guilt you in to buying things - so I just don`t even go, I go to shops that don`t give a toss bigger ones or buy online.

What about salesmen who make creative suggestions of complimentary products to your purchase

Like when I used to work in a hardware, someone comes in and they want a board to make a shelf, it would be rather re is of me not to check if they needed brackets, screws, rawlplugs, caulk, varnish, power tools....

Same if a lady buys a dress is it intrusive of the shop assistant to suggest bags/shoes/blingystuff??

it's not just shops, I had to go and see the doctor last week with a strange rash on my baby-maker. :o

It's bad enough that you have to pay €55:mad: but she offered me a happy ending for an extra €5 and the had the cheek to ask for another euro for a baby wipe!

    this country just gets worse.

Boss: Turnover is down. We should get the shop assistants to start upselling!

Staff: Would you extra [product], there's 10% off with any purchase.

Customer: These staff are really annoying, I'm going to start shopping elsewhere.

Boss: Turnover is continuing to go down. The staff mustn't be upselling enough. I better make sure it's down twice as much from now on.

    ( & repeat until bankruptcy)
