My HDD is corrupted, specifically the boot partition.

I am running parted magic from USB on the machine, and have an external drive hooked up to it. I will have to reinstall from the factory disk overwriting all my data, what can I do from parted magic with an external drive to allow me to recover my data, settings, drivers etc?

Can I just copy/paste the windows folder? Use some program which will allow me to restore all my data?

    Thanks guys

Most of your data will be stored in the Users/Documents & Settings folders. The Windows folder is system files only. Have you tried repairing the partition or install?

A very good tech guy spent all day doing hdd recoveries, diagnostics, attempted OS and boot repairs and system restore file recoveries to no avail. The wrong thing got corrupted on the HDD and its un-salvageable according to a guy with far better IT skills than me, he gave me the parted magic so I could grab what I needed.

Right now I am just copying folders manually to an external hdd, I just want to grab as many settings as possible.

Some applications will save settings in the App Data folder in Docs & Settings or Users folder if Vista or higher. The registry saved settings and license codes will likely be unsalvageable though.

Thanks, I have a long few days ahead. I have a 500gb external drive now, any recommendations for backup software? I suppose I can only blame myself (and microsoft updates) for having to do all this manually.
