Hi, do the Garda ring insurance companies when you produce your cert at the desk at nominated Garda station?

I got stopped by Garda for no Tax (fixed penalty 60euro) and I have to produce insurance cert at Garda station,even though I had a valid insurance disk, just want to know how will the Garda at the desk know if I am actually still insured?? does he ring them while you wait?

Your insurance cert says if you are insured or not.

Presumably you will be named on it and it will have an expiry date on it.

Unlikely they'll check to be honest (which is a shame in some case's)

Would it flag on the pulse system that your uninsured? Although if the garda has his suspicions he just could ring the insurance company there and then.

They might ring, Think it depends on the guard. With the massive probs they've had with people having a cert but not being covered due to cancellation by the insurance company.

More are getting caught now cuse of the ANPR cameras tho:)

I was told to produce my insurance details last summer, brought in the actual disc rather than the cert, they looked at it and said "thats fine" :rolleyes:. Not implying all gardai are like that but complete lack of intrest i found !

Are you saying that anyone might just ring to the insurance company, and tell: hi there, I'm a guard, could you please check if Paddy Burke's policy is valid?

How would the insurance company know it's the guard ringing?

Okay, maybe I didn't explain correctly..

I enter the Garda station, explain I was stopped and have to show cert etc...

Garda looks at my cert, sees the expiry date and my name on it, types into the system, I walk out of the station BUT I have stopped making payments months ago, I just never returned the cert & disc to insurance company.

If a Garda rings the said Insurance company and asks them to comfirm if I am Actually insured, would that not make more sense??

I see this happening in england on traffic cops, one qiuck call to insurance comapny and bang, car impounded, and owner gets court/fine

Op, if you have insurance you need'nt worry !! I would imagine its fairly uncommon for a garda to go to that much trouble unless you are known to them.

No, not worried, I am insured.

I heard of people going to the station after hours (when insurance companies closed) and producing a cert but actually only paid the first months payment and not bothered to pay the rest of the 11months....

All he/she needs is proof that you were insured at the time you were stopped - whether you're still covered now is irrelevant.

Not sure if insurance companies actually do this in practice but i always thought that if you did not return your disc then the gardai would be notified?

I can very well imagine that there is a procedure between AGS and the insurance companies and not as simplistic as you make out. I know they have checked policies before.

They photocopy it and your licence, as regards ringing, i would say there is a system in place where they can check if a policy is still valid, we do live in an era of modern technology

Of course they can ring, If i had your name and policy number i could ring and ask were you insured, it's not illegal for insurance companies to give out that information

If I was to go to Grad station after - hours say around this time and produce my cert, how would he (the garda on duty) check with insurance company?

They just read the cert and signed it happened in my case when I was waiting for my log book,

Cant understand why sum body whos insured would be asking questions about how do they check if its valid of not

The point I am making is how do people get away it, and is there no system ij place to cross check details?

Again I am insured, I have the cert here, if only I had of shown it to the Guard at side of the road I would not have to present at station (and waste both mine & garda time)

Yep...know people who work for a couple of well known insurers and they said they often get calls from Garda checking the validity of an insurance cert.

It actually makes sense to me.
I just recalled they put the system in Poland, where you can check online if someone has insurance policy by just entering registration number or vin number. It's here and it returns the policy number if there is a valid policy with the car asked.

The same way if you have an accident with someone, you can take their policy number, ring their insurance company and ask if they are insured
