Oh, I do remember that period.

Did that make it acceptable back then for the OO and its supporters to try to murder police officers?

I had to google there to see what ye are on about

    Meet Diamond Dan

Orange Order education officer David Scott would like him to be a mentor for young people offering advice on a range of matters encompassing the general theme of civic responsibility.

'It goes without saying that the Orange superhero will be in favour of young people attending church, helping others and showing respect for the community,' he said.

'Diamond Dan will be the kind of person who offers his seat on a crowded bus to an elderly lady. He won't drop litter and he will be keen on recycling. He will also be very committed to the Orange Order and to the Junior movement and will make efforts to know all he can about the history and culture of his community.'

So you're excusing loyalists shooting at the police? You'd not be if it was the IRA shooting at the police.

It was completely wrong. End of story.

Most interesting that he paid homage to Gusty Spence who, during Keith's lifetime was a republican. :D

Well I do support the right for people to express themselves in a democratic society.

I remember people being batoned bloody by the RUC for daring to display a tricolour (= expressing themselves) in what was by no stretch of the imagination a democratic society (gerrymandering, company votes, housing qualification and so on).:rolleyes:

If the Portadown goons want to march down that road, all they have to do is comply with the conditions the Parades Commission sets and negotiate with the residents without prior conditions. In other words, it is the Garvaghy Road residents who choose who represents them and how they vote, not a crowd of bigots who still seem to be having difficulty coming to terms with the 19th century, much less the 21st. If Orange lodges and Apprentice Boys and Black Preceptory outfits in other parts of the Six Counties have managed to work things out with their neighbours and gain their respect by showing some, it must be possible for the Portadown trogs to do the same.:):)

This is a matter of some debate, as you'll no doubt recall.

Gusty Spence was an Ulster Volunteer. Never a Republican.

He welcomed what he called the inevitable 32 county republic and had huge respect for the provos. He called his involvement with loyalists as protecting the interests of his community within Ireland.

He was a sectarian murderer who murdered innocent people because of their background three years before the conflict even started.

Auction of 'Gusty' Spence archives casts new light on UVF's secret talks with IRA-Saturday March 10 2012

Spence, who died last year, was a leading figure in loyalist organisation the Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF). He spent 18 years in prison for the murder of a Catholic man, Peter Ward, in 1966, but later in life renounced violence and supported the peace process in Northern Ireland.

    Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF)
AKA/Aliases Used: Protestant Action Group (PAG), Protestant Action Force (PAF)

    Formed: 1966

The UVF is a Loyalist-Protestant paramilitary organisation.

The UVF was formed in 1966 in response to the 50th Anniversary of the Easter Rising. 1966 saw large republican commemorations, and fearful of a revived republican campaign, ex-British soldier Gusty Spence organised a new paramilitary organisation to counter rising nationalist sentiment and halt any introduction of equality legislation for Catholics.

But he was a member of the Ulster Volunteer Force. He wasn't a Republican. Bringing up the deaths of people won't change that.

What is the point you are making? No one is discussing the deaths during the Troubles.

You're lauding a man who carried out a sectarian murder of an innocent man because of his religion. Him, and you, are scum.

Fair play to them for expressing themselves in a long struggle. They are fully entitled to do so. As are all patriots.

Pretty sure he has denied that. But that is besides the point of the thread anyway, no one is discussing the Ulster Volunteers or the PIRA.

I've never visited the North, but is it true that all the traffic-lights each have three orange lenses, which leads to great confusion for road-users?
