Word 2010 compatibility with earlier versions

    I know little or nothing about computers so i was wondering if anyone can help with this issue. I bought a lap top last year Windows 7 (Word 2010).

    I use a computer at work and save word processing documents as .doc. Little did I realise that when I started using the new laptop with Word 2010 on it and which saves documents as .wps, I found that I can not save and transfer work on to my memory stick between the two computers. I know there is a compatibility programme which i think I have messed up anyway and which I could never really understand.

    Can this problem be sorted out? Can I simply have the old version of Word (that saves documents as .doc) put into my new laptop and dispense with this new .wps Word 2010? I am Galway based and any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Has anyone had the same problem and if so how did you deal with it?

    WPS is a Works file, not Office 10.

    Simplest solution is to save your file as a word 97 - 2003 document.

    First click the Office Button on the top left hand corner of Word 20xx

    Then, choose "Save as" from the menu...

    Edit: as per the previous post, are you sure the documents are being edited with Office (Usually a trial version, unless paid for) or Works as was suggested...

    And while we have that nice screen shot, you can change the default format to save files if you click the button Word Options:

    1. Click on the “Save” button in the left hand column

    2. Look at the very first option on that screen – it lets you select the default save format. For example to “Word 97-2003 Document (*.doc)”, using the drop down menu.
