So the Atari Jaguar turned up yesterday.

First impression are quite good, console is nicely constructed and looks well. Only has a single button probably to keep things simple for the domestic American market. Lack of dust covers over cart slot and exposed edge connectors does cheapen in a bit.

Inside its also a nice simple layout, only a single PCB with no trailing wires. Everything is contained on the motherboard and all wrapped up in a metal shield. No region locking on the carts and only a single link on the PCB to switch the console between 50/60Hz. Supposedly the games are written such that they will detect whether the console is running at 50 or 60Hz and modify timing and screen size as necessary.

Now, the controller is a piece of work.. and not in a good way. Doesn't fit well in my average sized but manly hands. D-pad is ok but the main 3 buttons have no feel whatsoever to them. The 9 button pad and card inserts loses their novelty factor pretty soon.

The software, well the 3 games I got with the console probably aren't the best examples but unfortunately far from the worst by all accounts.

Cybermorph was developed as a prove of concept for the console and somehow it managed to convince people to proceed with the console.

Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story is basic fighter, found it tough going primarily due to the poxy contoller.

Wolfenstein 3D, is ok can't see it being any better than the multitude of other ports out there.

Must try and get Tempest 2000 and Alien Vs Predator for it as these would seem to be the best games.

To be honest , I have more of an interest in the hardware architecture in some of these console rather than the actual game play. The Jaguar actually has a decent enough design (even 64bit in places :) ) but hampered by a few serious hardware bugs and poor development kit. Still has a very active homebrew scene so might try and get a 'hello world' out of it at some point.

AvsP is an absolute stinker but reviewed well at the time since it was the closest thing to a Doom clone on consoles at the time and had a great license.

Tempest 2000 on the other hand is worth the price of the system. It's the only good exclusive for it however.

So you can safely 60Hz mod them? Why did I not know this??

Nice post OP. Any pics of the innards? Be interesting to see what it looks like inside.

Yep, remove the 0 Ohm link at R140 on the underside of the PCB sets it to 60Hz.

I'll throw a few pics later on.

If you leave it in place at one end, & wire it to an SPDT switch. One side to original point, the other to an open circuit...that should have the display hertz selectable shouldn't it? Or is it an smd resistor, too small to access?

Aliens Vs Predator is absolute dung, I have it and it stinks up the place big time.
Tempest 2000 is glorious, plays great and llamasoft did a great job producing stunning effects with the machine.
Not sure how Raiden stacks up against other versions, I have it somewhere and must give it a lash.
The other titles seem no better than their 16 bit equivalents. Club Drive and Chequered Flag are poor polygon racers, more fun to be had with Virtua Racing on the Megadrive or Stunt Race FX on the Snes.
Cybermorph isn't great tbh, although it's been a while since I played it.
Iron Soldier isn't great either, again it's been sometime since I played it.

Its an SMD resistor alright but plenty of room to solder links to a switch, from what I read I don't think there are any games that depend on 50Hz but a few are better in 60Hz. So I'm leaving mine at 60Hz permanently rather than fitting a switch.

Just need to buy an edge connector and make a RGB cable as well before sticking it on the shelf beside the 2600. Must get a label for the shelf "The Beginning and The End"

Was looking forward to AvP :(

That game and the Jag itself really reminds me of the 32X - an attempt at 3D but with coloured polygons and no textures.

If you could fit a 50/60hz switch that would at least help with the framerate issues. Definitely a mod worth considering (I didn't know you could do that either)

Where would I get the Jag edge connector though?

I think this one is the right pitch, too wide so would need to be trimmed.
I'll try and pick on up today and fit it, although whether the Jag is worth cutting up a good SCART cable is another matter.

Sound, let us know if it fits. It can't be worse than all the work Retr0 put into getting a CD-i working again can it :D

Finally got a couple of edge connectors, 28pin rather than 24pin but sure more is better then less.
Don't have a SCART cable to chop up right now so built a composite cable instead for now. Works grand nice improvement over the RF, Tempest 2000 looks and sounds great :)

Have 2 spare connectors if someone wants them.
