"I'm a TD, I'm gay and I want to marry" - John Lyons in tonight's Evening Herald.

Is he our first out TD?

You would have to wonder would he have gotten within an asses roar if he came out with that before the election.

    It shouldn't make a difference.

    Of course not

There's also Dominic Hannigan from Meath

Or Emmett Stagg and the scandal of the rent boy in the Phoenix Park
His voters in Kildare North don't care, he's been voted in ever since

Why didn't he say it before then, surely it just didn't hit him the last few weeks.

    Sure it was common knowledge
Ok, not common knowledge but it was posted about over in the election and politics forum last year during the election

What Stagg did was a shock and hit the newspapers as a scandal but Lyons is different

Voters knew about Lyons before the election didn't need the Evening Herald to broadcast it. Nobody cares

No matter what happened in the park I don't think I have ever seen Emmett Stagg quoted anywhere as being anything other then a married man and a father.

Dominic Hannigan was out before the 2007 election

    www.independent.ie/opinion/analysis/where-are-all-the-gay-politicians-87994.html

While John Lyons wasn't overtly out in the 2011 election it wasn't a secret in the constituency - there were some sun headlines about John Lyons and Dominic Hannigan 9 months ago.

I don't consider Emett Stagg to be gay given that he is still married - bi perhaps

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

There's also two other TDs who would be known within their party / some constituents but are not out to the general world.

It's very refreshing to see someone in the public eye being openly gay, and nobody giving a **** about it.

i agree sometimes newspapers will want to bring these issues to the fore literally just to sell papers
