Downloading legal torrents.

Hi,

I have a legal torrent I wish to download. A flavour of Ubuntu. At the moment I am unable to do this on the UCC network. Is there any way around this as I have no other Internet access?

Is there any way to enable certain ports that are not otherwise enabled also? I am not able to do simple things like update my virus scanner and Microsoft Office on the college network. It's grown to be quite frustrating.

Download it from a direct URL such as:
http://www.linuxmint.com/download.php - Mint (which I'd recommend if you want to use a Ubuntu variant, dunno why you wouldn't want to use Fedora though)
http://www.linoob.com/2011/04/kubuntu-11-04-kde-4-6/ - Kubuntu
http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/releases/lucid/release/ - Xubuntu

And change the ports those programs use to :8080, since thats one of the very few thats open. (Although thats still not an assurance that it'll work)

i think the computer science department have a version of linux that they give hard copies of. you may need to give them a blank cd or something. they used to do it a few years ago

its doubtful they allow torrents of any kind to be used on the network, they will be scared to have open ports and scared of the bandwidth load(although i'm sure they can handle it)

...Heanet mirrors the majority of Linux distros. You can download over http in minutes. Almost as fast as a LAN. e.g. http://ftp.heanet.ie/mirrors/ubuntu/dists/

Yup, JohnnyDarko is right-you can't download torrents using the UCC network, because the necessary port for peer-to-peer file transfer is not open.
You won't be able to change that though.
