I have spoken to a few people who have been pulled over by traffic corps recently and without even being asked , they were advised that their vehicle wasn't taxed and in one case that the vehicle was not insured. Apparently cars are now equipped with a device that when the cars number is screened this information is shown to gardai. I wonder how avalable this equipment is and how it works , does the car number have to be keyed in or does it just screen a number of cars and pick up the dodgy ones
In the insurance case it did turn out that the car was actually insured but in the tax case , she was handed an on the spot fine and he didn't even look at the windscreen

They'd have a field day around my area then. There's loads of cars in my estate with tax months (6+) out of date

Hopefully they are starting to use them,

The amount of cars I see that aren't roadworthy or not tax and insured out there is disgraceful.

The system is call ANPR, it uses number plate recognition (like in the M50 toll) and then it can check if the motor tax / insurance is in date. Was stopped the other day and the guard showed me the screen, looks pretty cool, I came up as uninsured I dunno If its because I only have the car a few weeks or because of the Quinn / liberty changeover

have a look at one of those shows on Sky / Dave / GOLD etc .. Car Wars, Traffic Cops, Road Wars etc ... they have been in use in the UK for years and they can scan hundreds of cars every minute and flagging reg plates which throw up something fishy .. no insurance, MOT (in the UK), tax, unpaid fines, criminal history relating to the car (as in used for transporting drugs) ...

They even use these cameras in some of the cites and they scan the cars passing looking for all sorts of offenses especially unpaid fines etc ..

Its seems to be endemic at this point, especially with tax. The amount of cars I see with tax more than a month out of date is increasing all the time. At a time when Govt is debating changing the tax system to increase revenue, they should really consider asking the Gardai the enforce the current system. Its typical though we never enforce anything and instead prefer to make it harder for those who are actually compliant.

But hey what ever rocks your boat and keeps you happy.

Have seen those yokes in uk and other countries but didn't know for sure if they operated here.

One of our main Motorways also has reg plate recognition. Abeit it is not used for the purposes of identifying vehicles which do not have TAX or Insurance.
The M1 has a system they call ITS I believe. It reads the reg at the start of the motorway and during the trip and calculates the average travel time from one end to the other. For a long time I thought that the electronic signs displaying travel time to "Dundalk" or "Drogheda" or even the Tunnel were just input by some bored tech somewhere in a control room. Apparently it is all down to this handy little device.

I don't think the NCT info is checked, not 100% sure though.
Even if it is it's not really a measure of a car's roadworthiness a month or so after the test.

Is the ANPR system updated everyday for tax, or do the gardai have a direct link.
I taxed wifes car the other day, disc has not arrived, what will it show up as?

Also where do they get insurance details, is it only from what you provide when you tax car?
