30 something posts in on this thread and all I know about the guy is his name.

So yeah... I've heard of him... that's about it...

When you watch the video you'll know.

I had a quick look on Wikipedia, guy is an animal and needs to be put down asap. What's almost as disturbing is this:

    http://blog.foreignpolicy.com/posts/2011/10/15/rush_limbaugh_on_lords_resistance_army_obama_invades_uganda_targets_christians

This scumbag has the highest rated talk show in the USA (wiki stats, but I've no reason to disbelieve them) Is he a Bond villain or what?

Anybody got a tl:dw version of the video? Not really arsed committing half an hour to watch it.

Saw a film recently with Gerard Butler, Machine Gun Preacher, a true story about an ex-biker who goes over to build orphanages and gets into a war of sorts with Kony and the LRA.

    Fairly crap film though :(

Watched some of the video. Usual "we care" people in America, but nothing about carpet bombing the place where Kony is.

Thus wiping out the children he has captured?

    Yeah. Brilliant plan there.

The full effect of the video wont sink in without watching it. The quality of the information and it's effect from a source such as Wikipedia isn't the patch on the video. I normally couldn't give 2 shíts about these type of viral campaign, but in this case I genuinely encourage you to watch it. It is nothing short of amazing.

It's a pretty amazing video. Well put together with accurate information and it produces a powerful result. There's no place in the world for people like Kony in this day and age. I'm surprised it took so long for his name to hit the headlines.

Fair play to the producer for devoting so much time to this cause, it's a worth one. The power of social media today is pretty amazing.

the power of social media would bew amazing if anything were actually done about this

You can deploy troops all you like finding them in Gureilla territory is a different story, as long as kony stays in uganda and doesn't get above his station nothing will be done, FACT!

Good movie, but sadly it will be forgotten in a week, the only thing that will come of this is celebs jumping on the band wagon to look good.

If you watch the 'extremely loud and incredibly gross' link that will further emphasize how much of a di*khead Rush Limbaugh is.

About the campaign, it would be great if it worked but I can't help but hold the view that if Kony were taken out, somebody else would just assume his role.

Nonetheless, I see no harm in supporting this campaign, and a lot has already been achieved by it. Hopefully the ambition will be achieved and this will make a significant difference to the lives of those suffering children in Uganda.

Well - considering that Facebook and other social media sites spurned and spread the word of protests across the Middle East last year, then why shouldn't this work?

We live in an extraordinarily interesting time, where things are changing constantly around us.

That's just awful... I couldn't read any further that this..
There’s also something inherently misleading, naive, maybe even dangerous, about the idea of rescuing children or saving of Africa.

I could go on and on about the faults in that blog because most paragraphs are arguable but I won't, it will take too long

The fact very little of the money goes directly to the aims of the organisation and the issue about the Ugandan army don't bother you?

feel like quoting the rest of that quote?
As Christ Blattman, a political scientist at Yale, writes on the topic of IC’s programming, “There’s also something inherently misleading, naive, maybe even dangerous, about the idea of rescuing children or saving of Africa. […] It hints uncomfortably of the White Man’s Burden. Worse, sometimes it does more than hint. The savior attitude is pervasive in advocacy, and it inevitably shapes programming. Usually misconceived programming.”

The fact very little of the money goes directly to the aims of the organisation and the issue about the Ugandan army don't bother you?

    The rest went to:
Staff Salaries; big organisation, many would work full time at it and have no other source of income. They need to be supported somehow too.

Travel and Transport; They don't get to Africa by teleporting quite yet. I would imagine that they do a few talks in various countries too.

Film production; Exactly like the video. This raising awareness and is advertising. This part, I would consider, to be quite important as it would also document the whole experience.

As for the arms, I really don't think a man such as Kony will listen to someone asking him nicely to stop nor will he just stand there and let them arrest him... but I could be wrong...

Although i don't quite agree with all the charities work, people Judging them must take into account their aim.

Their aim is to raise awareness, advertising isn't cheap.

Heard about him and the LRA a few years ago. Kony and his organisation are certainly a dangerous and vile group imho.

I have a number of problems with that film.

Kony is a bad man but hes no worse than the Ugandan army who have recruited soldiers as young as 13. The 30,000 child soldier figure is also completely inflated.

Furthermore, Kony is fighting Muslim groups in Sudan. That is probably why hes not languishing in a jail right now.

On the contrary,It's in Saudi's interests to keep the muslims in Sudan happy, and it's in america's Interests to keep saudi happy.

On the contrary, the groups in Sudan are groups who are calling for the Al-Saud family to be removed from power. The last thing they want is those groups gaining influence

feel like quoting the rest of that quote?

The White Man's Burden is speaking of wars such as in Iraq etc which weren't wanted in the first place. If you watch the video, even the part about Jacob, how can you say that they don't want protecting, they don't want rid of Kony?
Where in history has there been military action which the mass population actually want like this one? It doesn't have to be brutal with technology.

''The savior attitude''? Why does doing something right have to sound so condescending? I mean, we're all people, all humans and as the video says, it wouldn't happen in a rich country. Why are we letting it happen in Africa?

8.6 million is a lot of money. 32% seems like a small amount being used. I think that's a reasonable criticism.
I wasn't aware teleportation wasn't possible. Thanks for clarifying.

The point about the army was more about them raping and looting in the same was Kony does. Maybe that wasn't clear.
