I'm sure many of you will have an old unoccupied farm house near the sheds. I was told by a county councillor, that you will have to pay the household charge in it, if it has an electricity meter. Seems crazy to me.:(

Doubt it very much. Would have to be suitable for residential occupation.

We have one and got confirmation from county council that it was exempt from the second house tax as its unoccupied. I assume that the same applies to the €100 charge. I'm not paying it on that house anyhow!

    I'm simply not paying it.

I didn't pay the second home tax on it either. The house isn't liveable. Its completely cleared out of all furniture. Today i am applying to have the esb meter connection from it - I am going to lay a cable from my own house to serve farm sheds around it. This will mean no standing esb charge.

Do you mind if I ask what county you are in Box09?

I am in this situation, and am debating if I should cancel the ESB connection or not. If I knew I was going to get caught with this household charge on top, I would definitily cancel it.

Don't worry. Such a 'house' will not be liable - it would have to be capable of beneficial occupation.

Need only pay if it's lawful.
