When I boot up my PC I get a SMART warning from my bios that one of my hard drives is bad and should be replaced. I get the same warning from "Intel rapid storage technology" program but neither of them give me any details on what's actually wrong.

I ran HDtune and it can find nothing wrong with the hard drive, I can dismiss and reset the warning using the Intel program.

Is the actual fault log kept somewhere so I can see what's wrong and maybe get some idea how long the hard drive will work. It's working fine in windows other than that warning.

Best thing to do is download the Acronis Drive Monitor and check the details of the fault.

SMART errors can be as simple as "your drive has more than a given threshold for bad sectors being remapped" or as bad as "We're going down, smoke 'em if you got 'em". If Drive Monitor counts the errors as serious, I'd suggest backing up any data you want to keep and getting started on a replacement drive (either RMA if it's under warranty or buying a replacement if not).

It's fairly old, it moved from my old PC and has been a dumping ground for video and downloads so it's gotten a fair bit of use over the years. I wouldn't be too surprised if it's on the way out.

It says "reallocated sectors count" Value=35 threshold=36. It says the health is at 30% and the threshold is 70%. Sounds bad.

    It's for the bin.

It could last another day or another few months but either way it's on it's way out. Best to backup and get a new drive.

    thats not strictly true.

i have a 160gb drive thats not clicking but the mft is fecked on it.... the drive will format but the data once on it gets lost cos the mft is unrepairable.

even smart detects this mft error.

Make a small partition at the start of the drive, then use the rest of the disk for another partition, now the MFT is in a different place. Then delete the small partition.
