i would not recommend it for fox hunting now that you can get 223 , and diferent calibers but it still holds the right of a gud vermin gun . and theres lots of older shooters here that will agree with me[/QUOTE]At 200 yards lol. I'll meet you with a sheet of paper with and you can show me with the 22 magnum. It wouldn't penetrate through a copy book at that range

Would you volunteer to take one in the chest at 200 yards?

Looking at basic ballistic calculators a 40 grain .22wmr round has about 85 ft/lbs at 200 yards. That's around the same as a .22lr sub at 100 yards.

I wouldn't be betting on the copy book, that's for certain.

Plenty there at 200 yards from wmr to drop a fox with a well aimed shot. Sure he might take a few steps but dead is dead

Maybe not a copybook lol but a hardback one it be slim to none. Anybody shooting fox's with one at 200 yards wants their heads checked with 60 to 70 ft-lbs at that range. Its a rabbit gun and that all its made for!

The 17hmr is a rabbit gun.
The WMR is appropriate for foxes at sensible ranges.

I shot foxes with mine at 150yards+ using a 6x42 scope.

I know use a .223 as it is far more suitable to the task.

I think this is horrid funny the way some think the .22magnum is a 200 yard caliber. Who on this shoots foxs @200 yards with one?????????????????????????????????????????????????????? Its -16 to -18inches of a drop at that range so thats equivalent to me shooting a taget at 450 yards with a .220swift also who would put a good sight on .22magnum to shoot at that range. If there was as much as a breeze at that range your gonna be in major difficulty i think. I'd say it would take it 2.5 seconds to hit the fox lol.Theres a slim chance the fox will die in a humane manor at that range.Ballistic charts dont even show drop or energy after 200yards as its common sence its in the ground at that stage. The hornet is supposed to be the lowest recomended caliber for fox's imo as many do say.

according to a link you posted in the passed about the hmr and wmr the hmr is more up to shooting foxes passed 100 yards as it is more powerful passed this range ;)

Also now use a 223 for foxes for the same reason as you tho!

Neither the HMR or the WMR would be my first choice for foxing. But sometimes needs must!

As I said somewhere in this thread. ANY centrefire cartridge is suitable for foxing.

I have an uncle who shot 187 foxes in one year with a gas powered .22 air rifle. The next year he took 67 foxes with a .22lr until his wife took I'll.

I wouldn't be capable of this type of hunting but then I live in a very different county and I suspect his fieldcraft would eb a lot better than my own.

I can't actually open this link at work.
But it was more likely to have been this:

Chuck Hawkes didn't state he would not use a WMr or a HMR over 100yards on foxes.. But stated he would rather a HMR over 100yards.

But I've seen foxes knocked with a HMR at 180 yards, it's all about good shot placement. That what shootings about right? Not over power and aim anywhere and....... Hope mr fox drops.

I think a WMr or HMR are good learner rounds on foxes. Teach shooter shot placement.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,226 ✭✭✭Glensman

It's maybe not as fun'a learning experience for the fox!
Noone would argue that shooters should use a .223 on deer because it would teach them better shot placement!

As I say, when needs must. But if a shooter is setting out to buy a rifle for foxing, then advising a HMR or WMR is poor advice.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,615 ✭✭✭kildare.17hmr

Agreed but if they are buying a rifle for rabbits and the odd fox id recomend them. Dedicated fox gun 223, 204 or hornet imo

it dont matter what you beleve ! and as pointed out you copy book would have holes in at . When i get back from scotland after the weekend il give ya a shout . ive a car bonnet at the house , i think at 200 yards if it makes a hole in it then it will make a hole in mr fox. or How about a nights lamping instead of you playing x box:pac:

    rambling ! .

is this why there is a warning on back of box of bullets dangerous up to 2 mile ! and no im not say u can shoot up to a mile .

and the hornet not recomended , its favord buy the older generation , as the .223 was not availible at the time. if the .223 was alway there to be got then no one would be talking about the hornet.

i did not at any stage say buy a .22 magnum , my first post says hornet or .223 . but to make a statment the the .22 mag sucks to the ground after 100 yards , when lads have said that it more accurate after 100 yards is just plain crap . ive shot foxs at every range with a magnum , and racked up 40 + foxs in 2010 with my old lad lamping one night a week . and we shot 9 of them in one night .

You may bring the bonnet as there will be a better chance of the 22magnum hitting it at 200 yards than a copy book. At 200 yards TriggerPL you will only give a fox bullet rash IF it hit. A bonnet is much bigger than a fox. :P I never seen that warning on my hornady box. Maybe its on the boxs that kids be using lol..JOKE

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,012 ✭✭✭TriggerPL

dont worrie il put a target on the bonnet and a copy book to . it on a box of cci ive got it the van .

Look carefully you can see a hand reaching up pricking the balloons with a needle

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,012 ✭✭✭TriggerPL

thats a 400 yards you state that the bullet would be clearly in the ground at 300 yards .

i did notice in that video the houses in the back round tho , what a clown shooting .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,279 ✭✭✭4200fps

Sure he knows at that range there's no energy left in it to do any harm lol,if its 17 inches of a drop @200yrds imagine what it is @400yrds. You not see the hand reaching up with the needle????

I would think the .22wmr would be up to the job for a fox at 200yards. I wouldn't ever dare it but it would be up to the job with proper shot placement. I would also think it'd go through a copy book as in the soft back 80 pages or 120? I think most people saw it but the .22lr went through 4-6inches of meat and denim pants i think (correct me if im wrong) in this video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xAkOzr6cDx0
So the .22wmr would be able imo. Not trying to try start any more debates :o
I wouldn't try take a fox at 200 yards with my .17hmr unless i had too. My longest was 159yards (stepped out so not 100% accurate) headshot and dropped it on the spot.

Ive shot with a 22 magnum for many years and shot and killed foxes cleanly out to 150 yards with it. Im a big fan of the 22wmr and dont doubt its killing power.
I believe it is possible to kill a fox at 200yards with a 22wmr. However I dont think it is anywhere suitable for shooting anything bigger than rabbit at that kind of range. Shooting a fox at 150yards is even pushing it a bit.
I would never consider taking a shot on a fox at 200yards with one.
If you were to shoot 20 foxes at 200yards, a large number would not be killed cleanly as shot placement at that range is uncertain so on that basis its not suitable. There would be sufficient power there if the bullet hit the right place but that would be by no means certain in the field no matter how good the shooter is. One thing is for sure, I wouldnt like someone shooting at me at 200yards with a 22.wmr and only have a copy book to hide behind :D

So even though I think its a great round Id have to say I dont think its a 200 yard fox round. Nor is the .17 HMR. If you want to move out to 200yards on fox you should step up to hornet or bigger.
Bunny bashing and fox shooting out to around 120yards the 22 wmr is a great tool.
