any fast way to update a 6 year old windoze iso

    Ive re-installed vista on a pc, took me nearly a full day to download and install 6 years worth of updates

    for future reference...is there any faster way ? my vista disc is well old (2006)

    Use an imaging software and take an image of your fresh install now before it gets bloated and laggy, store it on another drive. For this I myself use Acronis (not free, I got a copy in a mag), but there are free alternatives. I never reinstall, I just restore an image in minutes

    Run CCleaner and be sure to defragment first, I recommend Defraggler, not the default Windows one.

    If you have the service pack installers downloaded, you can use a slipstreaming utility like Vlite to create a new installation ISO from your original disc.

    You can update your Vista DVD, use vLite and slipstream the latest service pack. Also allows you integrate a so called update pack, (i.e. WinFuture) essentially a bundle with all updates released since SP2. Of course you can download each patch manually from Microsoft.

    With vLite you can also customize your installation disc, remove unwanted windows features, make the installation "unattended", i.e. enter your license key and specify your regional settings, etc.

    www.wsusoffline.net will download all the updates but huge as it's all the updates

    www.ninite.com is great for installing the most common apps
    www.filehippo.com is handy since it covers most of the stuff not already done by ninite

    www.secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/ will auto patch a good few apps and report on lots more


    Now that you have your computer rebuild take a snapshot of the partition with clonezilla or similar so you can just restore to where you are now, and wsusoffline, ninite install thingy and secunia apps will allow you to update with the least amount of user interaction

    You can also "slipstream" the drivers for your system. Or indeed the drivers for pretty much any mainstream hardware under the sun with a "driverpack".

    sound, sorted now,
    i normally try avoid windows, its a pain in the hole mostly, but the missus uses it on one of my machines,
