I'm amazed that no one has mentioned the greatest irish entertainer of all time - Richie Kavanagh.

    For shame people, for shame........

There are plenty of good Irish artists around:
    Villagers
    Fionn Regan
    Sweet Jane
    Cathy Davey
    Wallis Bird
    Katie Kim
    Fight Like Apes
    The Great Ocean Divide
    Rarely Seen Above Ground
    O Emperor

Most people who say that there is no good music around anymore have probably never bothered to actually go and look for it.

Yeah, if you ignore the rest of the thread.

Also, while not Irish, Rodrigo y Gabriela emerged from Ireland having busked and played around temple bar.

I just found out James Vincent McMorrow is Irish!

Amazing voice, love his version of Higher Love.

That doesn't make them Irish musicians.

If were including bands form Northern Ireland (as ASIWYFA were mentioned) then Therapy? deserve a shout.

with the dominant youth culture of past two decade being about doing away with even singing, let alone other instrumental stuff in a desperate attempt to innovate the chances of something I can stroke a chord with is a lot slimmer now.

I think we do pretty well considering our population, how many good artists have come out of Belgium and they're over twice the size.

Well, Django Reinhardt was from Belgium and he's one of the greatest jazz guitarists ever. Apart from that, I can't think of too many artists that came from Belgium.

Interesting thread, I would have said NO, but going through some of the posts, it appears Irish music is not all boybands.

Soulwax/2 Many DJs, Hooverphonic, dEUS, Front 242. They love their electronic music in Belgium, they don't produce too many rock artists.

Cool, I've heard of Soulwax and dEUS but I wasn't aware that they were from Belgium.

So obviously nobody here has any "dacent" taste.

We have some cracking bands out there but unfortunately chart music is complete cack now with all the RnB sh1te (that is a disgrace to proper RnB).

And to anyone who disses Rory or Phillo, some of the best bands in the world will tell you they were influenced by them.

Big doesn't mean best, I don't really listen to Metallica or Mastodon anymore anyway. Although the Smashing Pumpkins did cover 'Dancing In The Moonlight' so I guess you do have a point.

In terms of influence My Bloody Valentine can't be beaten. Not only did they spawn tons of copycat bands, some great some not so great, but their influence has crossed over into multiple genres such as electronic music, metal, ambient etc.

Off topic as far as Irish bands are concerned but it's amazing how many bands cite The Beach Boys as a serious influence. Also look at the contribution from musicians that only had a couple of years musical lifespan, e.g. Buddy Holly only active for four years and Eddie Cochran for seven which is pretty amazing since both died at 22/21 respectively.
