Mariner engines are mercury engines :D and the RNLI have used them for years so there must be some good ones :D

I have been warned by an RNLI service man - beware of mariner engines - he has scrapped many of them. he reckons
    (1) Yamaha or Honda if u can afford it or Mercury - but not mariner he said he throws them in the bin all day long!!

Open to decent offers - give him 1200 as those engines are crap!

I would be more worried about the boat. Its a dejon 14 and they are very small. too small for 4 really and not greatly regarded as a sea going boat.

    Oh tis sold anyway

This one is in your price range he is asking €2200 that means €2000 :) if your lucky you might get it down to €1800:D and that will give you a few quid to buy a good AUX engine and some bits.http://www.donedeal.ie/for-sale/boats/3036455

It's a heavy enough boat and not the best for skiing with a 50 hp.

I have a 15 hp Mariner dating from 1997. It came with a RNLI Y class tender so it was in regular use by the RNLI. I have owned it for about 4 years and it has run reliably at all times. i would have no hesitation in recommending Mariners as good sound engines. For that matter most outboards will last for ages if they are reasonably looked after and serviced annually. Generally they suffer from under-use rather than over use. Deposits on the carburettor from unspent fuel is a common problem.
