We cleared about 70 meters of an old hedge adjoining a road, well it was more briars interspersed with trees and put up a fence. There is about a meter gap between the road and the fence. We want to plant trees in this space with the intention of harvesting fire wood some time in the future.

So my question is what type of timber and how far apart should we plant to get the maximum return from the space?

Your trees will be admired for years and then you will not be allowed to cut them down,Methinks!!

You Could try ash it is very suitable for firewood also it can be toped and it will resprout and grow again they do this in frace with certain types of trees when trees are about 20 years old there is the same amount of timber above 10' mark as below it so you can harves the top half of the tree and ten years the same again

Agreed. Ash is good to grow, gives great timber and is easy to maintain. It also looks well.
