I am so jealous of people who live in Dublin right now! Just discovered this place - the menu looks ah-mazing. Will be paying a visit when I'm next in Dublin. Drooool.

That's way to long for the kale crisps IMO.

My wife makes them often and it's 8mins max or they will burn.

Try it, but really surprised people recommending 20mins

I do mine for 20 but at gas mark 1. Turn them over half way. I also do them on on an oven chip tray so there's a good circulation of air.

So my mother asked me about "eating this way" this afternoon. I started talking to her about it & after a wholesale she said, with a knowing nod, "so it's essentially The South Beach Diet". I replied "no, it's not, as there are no grains allowed". Again she came back with "it's essentially The South Beach Diet by another name". Again I came back with "no, because the corner stone of the SBD is eating low GI foods which include grains and pulses, neither of which are paleo". It took a while but she gave up on the SBD idea.

She said she was willing to give it a try (her GP is pushing her to take meds for her cholesterol) & I commented that I would be interested to see what it does to her cholesterol levels. She informed me that she was sure they were down because she had been taking a combination of vitamins and minerals that she read about on the Internet. I suggested she have her blood checked and start the same day.

I wish I had a bench mark for my cholesterol. The last time mine was checked was 18 months ago and it was higher than I wanted it to be but not high enough to concern the GP. I would love it to be down for a variety of reasons. Health wise obviously but I would love to tell the GP that I eat eggs and red meat every day LOL

DCD... I'm glad your weight is on the way down. I have signed up for the online conference. I didnlt realise it was free and was reading through the list thinking "wow, some of them sound really interesting". Imagine my delight when I got to the "register free" bit :-)

Kale rocks! I found it in Tesco today :-) I'm tempted to make paleo colcannon with blitzed cauliflower and steamed kale with some raw white onion.

I made them too. 8 minutes here as well. They were yummy. My mother thought they tasted like grass.

I made the paleo colcannon. It was lovely :-) My mother wasn't overly impressed with it.

I don't see her switching to paleo any day soon LOL

hard to order off menu without drawing questions.

Have to say - went to a well known Dublin steak restaurant last Sunday night.
We ordered 2 steaks as mains both with salads and a side of seasonal greens, to the note of the waiter "that sounds healthy ! " I paid no attention till he arrived with a basket of bread ( something we knocked on the head long before I ever heard of paleo ) to his comment "Oh, it's a low carb buzz then is it ?" - to which I felt obliged to defend . Anyway - why should we have to put up with that, no tip ensued which left me feeling cheap for some reason and him probably with no idea his commenting on our order was imo inappropriate.

I find myself doing that more and more lately so people just get off my back. I hate lying but they just don't get it.

Gosh Rob I meant from my friends, for the waiter to comment was bang out of order, sure you could have been coeliac or whatever, none of his business either way.

I was lying to people for a few months with it, then I went and got allergy tested and it turns I do have an intolerance to wheat, alot more people have it than you might think.

very unprofessional for a waiter to comment on anything you order (unless invited!).

Relax...he was probably just trying to have a bit of banter. Most people would have been on a 'low carb buzz' and probably laughed about it with him....not his fault he ran into a couple of buzz killingtons who take their food too seriously.
"Anyway - why should we have to put up with that"!!....get over yourselves!

Just had 2 fillets of sea bass baked in butter, lemon, black pepper and salt,

    Unreal

I survived. I have just spent a little more than 2 days in my parents house and I survived without having a complete food freak out. The only "special" food I bought was a red pepper, some bacon and kale. It was great :-)

I suspect I'm having an "off" day tomorrow because I am visiting friends and it is just one of those situations where dairy free is as far as I can push the restrictions.

I would NOT have been happy with that wait staff but I have been dealing with nit picking the menu for years now so I'm better and play the allergy card if I need to (even though the allergy is not mine)

Well done lotwan. I fear an off day on Sunday also, going to brunch in my brothers. Now his wife is a terrific cook and very health concious, there'll be no junk food - most likely spelt or other non wheat pancakes and all the trimmings. But I would feel unfair to ask her to deal with my preferences at this time.
Was slightly naughty today with my dinner of Chinese duck and pancakes, some sugar in the glaze and hoisin and the flour in the (waffer thin) pancakes, but small amounts of both. I added a ton of veg stir fried in coconut oil to healthy it up a bit.

hey, I didn't really follow the steps as I've only seen the link in original post only recently, but I think it's really great way to do it. I'll just add my progress:
    1. done, veggies or fruit with every meal
    2. done, protein with every meal
    3. done
    4. done, since over 1.5 years; was actually quite easy (for somebody who used to snack on twix + coke) and that was my first step to lose weight
    5. done, I never used them much anyway
    6. done recently; tried a bit of bread a week ago as a test, and it was bad idea :P
    7. still have oats every morning... or rice with some meals; not sure if I'm ready for that yet, especially with working out a lot
    8. no milk, but I have some cheese or yogurt
    9. no soy or peanuts, but I'd still have beans or lentils occasionally
    10. I love fermented foods!

    That's great meijin.

So as expected it was hard to stay on track today but not too bad, in that at least it was gluten free - I had a spelt american style blueberry pancake with cream & fruit compote, a slice of frittata with onion and potatoes, and 1 slice of spelt & seeds homemade bread with butter & some lovely goats cheese (the firm one from Lidl, must pick some up myself) . She offered me a loaf of bread to take home & I was so sad to say no, it was delicious!

Sorry to burst your bubble DCD but spelt has gluten in it. It's just a more 'ancient' gluten grain.

To be honest I'm more of the opinion lately that it's the FODMAPs and possibly excitotoxins that are the main offenders in wheat. I don't think we can lump in rye, barley etc in with white bread.

    White potatoes are paleo right?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 187 ✭✭noworries

Grey area IMHO. Strictly, no they are not paleo and are not recommended - however, tubers are ok if you are an endurance type but sweet potatoes are the usual choice.

However 2 - if you are 100% paleo and you have a very small scoop of spuds with butter and you are very active then 95.4% (YMMV) is good enough for me.

But in answer to your question, no, the carbs in our venerable spud will cause a blood glucose spike requiring the dumping of insulin to counteract which is a no no in our 'new' pale world.

Personally I have left behind the spud in my quest for my inner cave man, and am feeling better for it.

They are more paleo than sweet potato which was introduced from south america after the humble spud.

I don't think roast potatoes or chips are healthy though.

I prefer jacket potatoes. So nice after a workout

    Hi guys.

Yungwan here aka The Irish Paleo

Thanks so much for mentioning my blog! I would be thrilled if I could help even one person realise the benefits of Paleo.

I have taken your comments on board Re:Length of Cooking Time for Kale and I agree maybe 20 mins was a little long. I never time things myself, and prefer to use my "eye" to measure things. So when writing the recipe obviously I was way off!!

    I have edited it appropriately!

Thanks again for the reference, it means a lot. :)

Morning folks, well I did get a slightly uncomfortable tummy after the brunch yesterday , but nothing too bad, not as bad as lotwan suffered by the sounds of it. I've always had a bit of an iron stomach though.

My last step on my stumptuous plan :D - I have combined the last two. I presume that means soy sauce is out? or is that ok because it's fermented? I see on some American blog these use coconut aminos, can't imagine getting that in Dunnes

Optional — take out beans and legumes such as lentils, soy, black beans, chickpeas, and peanuts. Personally, I find a few lentils or a bit of hummus now and again is no big deal, especially if the beans and legumes are soaked, sprouted, and/or fermented. So it’s your call on this one. But definitely chuck out soy.
Add some fermented foods: sauerkraut, kimchi, etc.

Hey there, afraid soy sauce is out:) it contains gluten anyway but Tamari will be your new best friend. I think it's soy also but at least it's gluten free.
Good luck with your next step.
I really miss lentils I must say. I'm gonna cut back on coffee this week and wind it down completely. Green tea should ease the transition:)
