Garmin cadence sensor question - why the 2 magnets?

Can anyone tell me why the garmin cadence sensor needs a spoke sensor as well as a pedal one? I don't want it measuring wheel speed, I'm happy with Gps speed and cadence, i can't see, nor can i find an explanation for, the superfluous spoke sensor?

Pedal is for cadence, spoke one is for speed. If you don't get gps signal you get the speed through that.

it initially works with the gps to determine your wheel circumferance and once it has that it calculates distance for you whenever the gps signal is weak / blocked. Usefull in places with heavy tree cover or tunnels, not so much in Ireland where roads are pretty clear almost all the time.

You don't really need to put the speed magnet if you don't want. What's the frustration about?

I used my garmin on my mountainbike for the first time at the weekend, in Ballyhoura. I didn't use the wheel magnet. On the trails, while in the trees, it seemed to be malfunctioning. The speed varied wildly. But, when I uploaded the data to my computer, it has corrected itself.
I think, it's black magic, no other explanation!!.

If you plan on using it on the turbo you'll need the magnet on the wheel. If clearance is tight, the 'magnet' side doesn't have to be pointed towards the sensor on the chainstay, it can be mounted on the spoke backwards and still work!
