Any suggestions how and when is best time to ask?

Howdy,

I have made the big step in purchasing an engagement ring for love of my life. Of course she knows as we chose it together. The only thing is I have not said when and where i will drop down on one knee. I'm on this for some suggestions on the following:

1. When or any suggestions if any do you feel is the right time of year. (holidays, her birthday (late in the year - i can wait lol) , summer , xmas any suggestions? and NO Valentines Day is not an option.

2. Any suggestions for possibly a romantic way... ( preferably not in front of a crowd, kind of find that way cringy and been honest awkward for the opposite person been asked). Obviously looking for the element of suprise above all, as i've said earlier ........she somewhat knows!!

All suggestions would be appreciated an also thanks in advance. Any brainwaves pass them on.

Don't do it on her birthday, Valentine's, Christmas etc - those are already holidays. Make a normal day of the year something special for her to remember! There's no best time either, just do it when you like. Bring her away for the weekend or go on a nice walk or something. Don't do it in a restaurant and definitely don't do it on Valentine's Day!

I didn't see that she knows about the ring since you picked it together, in that case don't wait til the end of the year to propose, that's really dragging it out and will be torture for her!!

Some of the nicest proposals that I have heard:

One couple went on a bog-standard beach walk and he dropped the knee and proposed.

Another went to a lovely scenic bridge and were watching the water flow under it.

Both times were a surprise to the bride. I would say to choose a nice outing in a pretty setting and have a little "picnic" with a small bottle of something to celebrate with, strawberries and 2 glasses.

Not all girls like the big proposal in front of a crowd. And now that you have the ring, do it sooner rather than later.

Cheers for the great ideas and overall good advice! I know it seems to be torture alright as she has brought up the topic a few times and I keep changing the subject! Let's just say it has not gone down well!!!!!! Although I have explained it is cause i want to be somewhat in charge of it and provide the element of suprise above all!!

An I assure everyone who comments it will not be done in front of a crowd!! I thought about her birthday which is in September but I suppose the random idea of a walk on nice evening etc.(as suggested) does sound better!

If she knows you have the ring, why would you make her wait 8 months? Every time you go away somewhere she'll be wondering if you're going to propose... the fact that she's brought it up a few times should be enough of a hint... just get on with it.

Simple answer really...... the ring wont be paid off till mid May or so!

what does it matter that the ring won't be paid off til May? Did you make a payment plan with the jewellers or something and therefore you can't collect it obviously til it's paid in full? Or have you taken out a loan to buy it and you have the ring in your possession? If you already have the ring in your possession then what does it matter?

If you have to wait til May fine but leaving it any longer is just not very nice tbh ... She knows you have the ring. It's completely different if you hadn't bought the ring and hadn't told her, but you've already bought the ring and she knows. Dragging it out for a few months is just I dunno, torture for the girl!!

She knows i put a deposit on it an that's it. Have an agreement set with the jewllers of paying it off in installments. Refusing to get a loan am saving for it instead. So have a majority of it saved. So I don't have it in my possession it is still ownership of the jewellers. I just have a deposit on it so as they wont sell the exact type to which she liked. So hence why it will be around the time i mentioned, not intentionally 'torturing' her.

I thought you already had the ring hidden away in a box at home. That's completely different so! Well in that case just pick a day then to do the question after you get the ring. I wouldn't do it on her birthday though, like I said before - make a random day special to you both. My fiancé proposed to me on a random day and now it's a special day to me

Does she know you're picking it up in May?

If so is there any chance you could scrape the money together a little earlier? So pay off the ring in April and the just surprise her on a normal dinner out or evening or walk on the beach or something? It doesn't have to be all ribbons and roses, just a quiet time that's special to you both?

She won't be expecting it at all if she thinks you're not getting it til May and that would make it all the nicer with the surprise....

No all she knows is that there is a deposit on an that is all. She knows no more. Maybe i should not have told her that..... oh well to late now! May is when I think I can pay it off at earliest to be honest. Thanks tinkerbell for the info and advice!

Lots of nice locations what do you like??? Scenery;old ruins;woods & forests???

Also if you have a friend who's handy with a camera it might be a nice idea to have them hide in the bushes and capture the moment

If you do this, make sure he knows exactly when and where, cos if it's not you they photograph from the bushes, you could be a guest down for the wedding.

Seriously though, if she knows it's coming maybe throw her off by hinting/organising something where she'll think you're gonna propose (her birthday later in the year?), and then ask her somewhat out of the blue before then.

Sligo:mullaghmore beach or glencar waterfall-there's also a lake there that's magical

Kerry:torc waterfall or anywhere on the gap of Dunloe route

Donegal:lots of quiet beaches around the Gaeltacht areas but try portsalon beach -you're on a cliff face and then an amazing beach appears out of nowhere

You could hire a rowing boat on a lake and visit a little island for a picnic and ask her there?

The Powerscourt gardens in Wicklow would be a good spot, can get a lunch there and fantastic scenery. They even have a small waterfall.

Glencar waterfall is beautiful as in powerscourt gardens. Great choices. Would cliffs of moher be bad choice???
As you can see i've googled images thinking of ireland providing a great sunny day etc. hahaha

You would want to choose a time wisely at the cliffs of moher-wouldn't want a bus load of tourists arriving in the middle of the romance!

What part of the country are you in?

Asomeday your on the ball there. Don't really want a crowd (cringy i feel). Could you imagine the american tourists.... haha.

From Carlow but am willing go anywhere in the country for a 'romantic weekend break'. So anywhere nice will do and some as suggested are lovely. Anymore keep them coming!! Thanks

Wineport Lodge near Athlone. The setting on the lake is fantastic and they've a great spa.
Dromoland Castle if you can afford it.. it's quite fairytalish... They've huge grounds any many walks end up near old ponds and little statuettes. It's very romantic.

Dont be predictable. Choose a random day but make sure it is special as she will remember what you do for the rest of her life (no pressure).
Depending on budget you could buy her a nice bag and place it inside it or whatever her taste is but do make an effort as you'll regret it if you dont
