    Has anyone ever done this? Is there any law or legal requirement or is it just an agreement between you and your company?

    To the best of my knowledge this is just between you and the employer.

    I assume you mean extended unpaid time off?
    There's no general entitlement for people in either the public or private sector though there are special arrangements for some particular jobs.

    But if you are a parent you are entitled to take parental leave.
