How do I get Facebook to stop emailing me?

I don't want an email every time one of my friends changes their status or adds a picture. I've tried unsubscribing from them and telling Facebook to stop notifying me, but the emails keep coming and it's really starting to irritate me. Ideally I'd only like to get an email when somebody adds me as a friend or sends me a message, but at this stage if I could just get Facebook to stop emailing me altogether I'd be happy.

I only joined Facebook a while ago and hate it. I can't make head nor tail of the account settings. Horrible website and app.

A simple setting controls this. I'll find the link.

Click on "Help" - "account settings"- then on the right hand side click "notifications".
From there you can either click "email frequency" at the top of the page which gives this option: "Send me important updates and summary emails instead of individual notification emails" or scroll down to "all notifications" and there you can change your various email notification settings.
