Roll up Roll up SuperBowl Sunday is upon us.
About to hit the supermarket to stock up on hotdogs, popcorn and beer.
Anyone else having a American themed party for tonight?

i watched a superbowl once with 2 other people

towards the end the other 2 lads had fallen asleep in their chairs and I decided to just turn the tv off and go upstairs to bed

it's almost as boring as baseball

Looking forward to it, love American Football. Its a bit of a marmite sport to be fair.

Will give the old woman attempting to entertain at half time a miss though...

Give me real rugby with without the wussies shoulder-pads and jockstraps!
    American garbage!

Yes it is, just look at the full body armor these guys wear just to play it. There's none of that crap in rugby, just full contact. That's why American football is rugby for pussies.

Both of you are needlessly picking an argument
Two different sports and both has good and bad points.

You may as well be comparing baseball and hurling

And people would die if they tackled like they do without the pads
Do they hit like this in rugby? So which is the wimps game?

It's odd, that's exactly how Rugby was explained to me (only in reverse)

'Rugby is like Football, but for pussies'

I'll watch it over the top of me netbook. Wouldn't be a bad sport if they didn't have so many breaks.

I think BBC show it the following night without all the breaks - or at least they did once a couple of years ago.

Rugby is the best team sport in the world by far imo.

My Irish teacher used to say "Rugby: a game for doctors and solicitors who like to act like hardmen."

She was a tyrant but she was spot on with the above statement. :pac:

If they played American football without the pads there would be nothing but paraplegics in the NFL. There would most likely be deaths too considering the amount of concussions even with the helmets.

You don't see tackles have as bad in rugby.

I'm going to try and stop this thread from turning into a American Football verse Rugby debate. Let's all take a breath and think about this reasonably....

Both sports allow the use of padding, but the requirements are different and have impacted the way the sports are played. In the NFL, rather than limit the effectiveness of pads, they'll allowed them to advance and get better. The result is that players can hit each other harder, with less concern for form or safety.

I've played both football and rugby (at very amateur levels, naturally) and I can tell you, neither are for pussies (let's reserve that title for 'soccer' players, shall we?). The style of play is very different. And for each difference you can name, there are people on each side arguing that difference makes their sport better.

In either case, without an understanding of the sport; it's unlikely you'll appreciate it or find it interesting. Nobody ever says, 'I'd never seen Rugby/Football/X before but it was on at the pub and I really thought it was awesome!'

People's first reaction is to associate the new sport with the sport they deem it most familiar to and than assume it's a lessor form. Show an American a rugby match and he says, 'Looks like pussies playing Football'. Show an Irishman American football and he says, 'Looks like pussies playing Rugby'.

That is, until they've watched enough to understand it.

To be perfectly honest, I don't see how you could enjoy one and not the other; if you actually follow them both any sufficiently long length of time.

The nfl is a thinking game. They plan there next move careful.

I would wear the gear so I wouldn't be hurt when been taken down by a bigger than me.

Also its the first time the nfl are streaming the superbowl for free

it's almost as boring as baseball

Several hundred or even over a thousand plays in a playbook

Trick plays, play action, run, pass, flea flicker, bubble screen, wild cat and a gazilion different formations

Coordinators whose job it is to design all this and outwit the coach on the opposite sideline.
It's chess on a field

There's a lot more to football then action for five seconds and then mutiple ad breaks which is the attitude of many here

Give it a chance, you may get hooked :)
Rugby is a bit simpler and will suit some others, ah bless :p
