I was wondering if there was an app that would block all data except for apps you specify? Its reasonably cheap for data in europe now so it would be handy to have something like Viber running in the background when abroad. Id prefer not to have my Facebook, email and a bunch of other apps pulling data at the same time though.

Im looking for a simpler way of turning off data to some apps without manually going in and changing the sync settings for each one.

Look into JuiceDefender, you can switch off data automatically, and leave exceptions for some apps. Not exactly what you want but it's a start.

Avast has a firewall built in. But needs root to get the control needed
You can control whether an app can access data. It has 3 toggles for each app - wifi, data and roaming. You just block which ones you want to...

Free too and plenty of other excellent features

Droidwall is what I use, simple although does require root.
