The only time I've ever flown was in 2004 when I flew to Italy. I haven't been abroad that much because I hate abroad. It's full of foreigners.

Sweet Mother of flying monkeys from Oz I hope this is a joke.

Had a horrifying experience as below.

Was on a flight and I noticed a man-like thing on the wing of the plane during mid-flight. I tried to alert the flight crew to this thing's presence, but every time they look out the window, the gremlin leaps out of view, so nobody believes me!

Anyway this is no man, the way it moves, it's slimey grey skin and leaping about on the wing of a plane at 20K ft in a storm!? I mean WTF!?

So then it starts to tear metal of the engine cowling and fire it into the turbine causing massive damage as highlighted by the fire and sparks coming out of the rear of the engine....

...wait... that was a movie.. my mistake.

Had to tell a fat bird to hold her ground during turbulence. Wasn't sure if she could control her flab.
    Terrifying.

Absolutely hate flying - thoughts of the weight of everything and how it stays up also maybe I'm a bit of a control freak but I don't like the idea of not being able to influence what's happening iykwim

Have to get prescribed meds going on flights to knock me out - I'm like BA :D

Except it's usually not full of scumbags (unless you fly easyjet of course).

One time we were coming into land and just as the plane was almost about the touch down it took off again and climbed back up. The pilot circled around for 15 mins or so and then landed properly. The worst this was there was no explanation as to why this had happened. A woman behind me had a panic attack.

And then last year I flew into Salt Lake city on quite a small plane. It probably seated about 40 people. As we came in to land the plane slowed down in stages and finally it seemed to literally stop in mid air. It was obviously still travelling at quite a speed but it felt like we were stopped in mid air.

It's a fairly standard aborted landing - could be for any reason from a herd of zebras running out on the runway to the pilot just making a balls of it. Nothing to be afraid of.

I'd prefer they try it again and ensure they get it right.

I was flying back from LA on 16th September 2001. Two Muslim men sitting in front of me.

I **** myself every time one of them went to take a piss.

Flew from Sydney-San Fran 10 years ago.

Arrived in San Fran 3 days later (CNN news crews waiting to interview us, airline offering free flight anywhere in the world). There were 2 emergency landings (diverted 2 hours back to Auckland because of passenger injuries - broken limbs etc.), and 1 aborted take-off. Was headline news in Oz, New Zealand and the States.

USA today report on 1st emergency landing

    NZ Hearld

Didn't help that the air hostess came on the Mic (passengers expecting calm) shouting "Everybody hold on to anything, we could be going down". Was like a bad rollercoaster ride - things flying around the cabin. The thing that truthfully crossed my mind - the scene from Airplane where the pair of t*ts come out of nowhere in sheer panic!

Plane dived (or fish-tailed according to investigation) for about 30 seconds due to mid-air turbulance. No seat belt signs so was totally unexpected.

Nothing really fazes me. Had a final destination moment where the seat table kept falling down as it was broken. Kept expecting the plane to burst into flames. At the end of the flight as we came into land the wings were going left to right it looked like the wing was going to hit the ground everyone was looking round thinking crap, but the pilot straightened up and landed but took ages to slow down.

If the plane is going to crash its going to crash not much you can do about it. Just don't watch final destination before you fly....

Was reading about a flight today from Heathrow to Chicago that was diverted to Shannon because of smoke in the cabin and it got me thinking about "scares in the air".

These videos might calm your nerves?

I dunno about scared on an aeroplane but I once scared off an aeroplane.

    I was like:

    RAAAAAAAAGH!!!

And made myself look as big as I could (because, y'know aeroplanes are like mountain lions an' all) and then it flew off. Seriously.

True story. You can even ask the security guards that detained me in the airport a little after, they were there.

I am an anxious flyer and I hate turbulence but I love to get a window seat and look out on the ground below like it's a map.

But dying in an airplane crash must be one of the most horrible ways to die.:( The plane is plunging to its doom, people are screaming and crying and literally ****ting themselves and a few, final minutes must seems to stretch like an eternity, before the passengers are ripped apart from the violent impact.

At least the black-box should be okay.

Myself and the wife were coming back from East Midlands in November '10 and there was a pretty drunk guy a few seats behind us. As we were coming into Dublin we hit some bad turbulence......some women started screaming and this set the drunk guy off. He was shouting at the top of his head that we were going to die etc! Staff had to go to him and calm him down.

    Was pretty funny to watch!

The tabloid media are the WORST for fear mongering and completely bullshítting about flying. They make up the most unbelievable crap and lie every single time any "incident" happens with a plane just to make a quick buck. Well, I suppose most media sources do that with every story.

At last! I thought I was the only one with deep suspicions about our wonderful free press, i.e. free to make up whatever they want.
Someday....someday....when I figure out how to start a new thread....I'll....I'll....someday.

And yes, landing at London City Airport in a strong crosswind, Thames to the left, traffic to the right, I could see the runway from my window as I checked whether the life-jacket was actually under my seat. Funny how instantly religeous you become in such situations.

People think i'm over-reacting because of my fear of flying

I'm not afraid of flying though, I'm afraid of crashing.

That's a LOT less likely to happen then getting violently killed by a car or person.

On a flight from Dublin to Dubrovnik earlier this year, as we were approaching the Croatian coast we hit some very turbulent turbulence. The Pilot wasn't able to keep the plane on a straight course for the runway which is just a couple of miles inland, so she had to swing around to the other end of it to try make a less dangerous landing. I've flown loads of times but this is the first time that I've been genuinely bricking it in-flight.

The two old men sitting behind me eased the tension though when, while everyone else was ****ting themselves, one says to the other; "Feckin women drivers, PJ". The boys didn't give a toss.
