it would be a waste of time imo.same as those "occupy wherever" idiots.what bloody good is it doing.a bunch of wasters is all they are.
wiki did it for 24 hours and could someone tell me if it did any good at all?doesnt look like it to me.
boards doesnt have within an asses roar the amount of people visiting the site as wiki does so i say again A BLOODY BIG GREAT WASTE OF TIME.

Well, 162 million people saw the message. Over 8 million clogged up servers and telephone exchanges by contacting their elected representatives. And dozens of senators withdrew their support for SOPA & PIPA after the blackout. What kind of effect were you expecting it to have?

    Bah Humbug!

Are you serious? The blackout was one of the biggest stories of this month. It provided coverage for the organisers of the movement to encourage people to phone the representatives! Did you see the swing of votes from the "for" category to the "against" after the blackout?

You're inability to distinguish between a worldwide blackout and an Irish blackout is, without being too mean, idiotic. The collective of Boards.ie, TheJournal.ie, Broadsheet.ie, Daft.ie etc etc would create a considerable media buzz around the idea of Irish internet censorship. We don't want the world to know... we want the Irish public.

Up until lastnight/today, a story on #IrishSOPA was non existant in the mainstream media. The only group that were covering the story was TheJournal.ie and Broadsheet.ie, Thanks to Anonymous and TJ McIntyre it was a headline story for most and will feature heavily on RTE tonight.

Without any sort of demonstration be it DDoS or Petitions we wouldn't have the publicity that we have now and an "Irish" blackout would only heighten the importance for the mainstream media to report on this story.

It had a major effect! Are you kidding me? Were you asleep for the past month?

SOPA in the US is practically dead and gone thanks to the efforts put in by the general public and the efforts to highlight the issue on behalf of those who took place in the demonstrations online.

I don't know about SOPA - but Ireland needs something to stop rampant piracy.

If you are protesting SOPA Ireland because it's unjust - I support it.
If you are protesting SOPA Ireland because you just want to keep pirating stuff - GTFO (IMHO)

Most people don't care about anything except whether or not they can torrent the new movie, tv show, cd that they want.

Boards.ie is an outlet for sharing information, knowledge and news. The government would be delighted for a boards.ie shutdown so no!

Can I ask what is this SOPA? I understand it's something to do with copyrighted stuff.

I vote yes on boards.ie going dark for 24 hours in protest or at least have something up on the main homepage or send a pm to all users. This law will affect boards.ie so it is in there interest to bring this matter to all boards.ie users.

    How will boards.ie be affected?

    Great video on SOPA

Just to let you know that SOPA isn't really the issue that is going to directly affect us. Sean Sherlock TD Labour is trying to adjust copyright legislation in Ireland with, from what we saw with the leaked draft, a very broad adjustment.

It could potentially give copyright owners the ability to shut down a site which has linked copyrighted material. This is where Boards.ie comes in. If I was to post a video of the Happy Birthday song, with this draft, Warner Bros. could shut down boards for copyright infringement. As daft as it sounds, it is possible with the one and only draft of the legislation that was leaked.

This guy has a great blog on the issues.

I think it's a great idea. It'd be a struggle not having AH to look at when i'm board, but it's be worth it!

I just go over to 4chan's /b/. Its like AH, just way more random and sometimes fcuked up. But theirs sub categories are pretty knowledgeable and informative as here. Watch out for traps tho.

Internet piracy law will be balanced, says Minister and yet some how I doubt it.

Also, if you have not read this you might want to. Really good insight

How about seek out and block all Government spys?! I`ve noticed some funny co incidences in things said on boards and Politicians. I`d say they`re using boards all the time to gauge puplic opinion, if we take the resource of them that might have more of an impact.

ACTA is signed by all of EU and Ireland now btw:
Today in Tokyo, the EU and 22 of its Member States officially signed ACTA, the anti-counterfeiting trade agreement. The worldwide citizen movement initiated against SOPA and PIPA must now focus on defeating their global counterpart ACTA in the European Parliament.

Another fantastic move by TJ McIntyre.

The Government only given 24 hours to look over the document? No problem we'll give them a hand with that! :D

    Fantastic work TJ and crew!
