Well, dotcomdolly, you motivated me to give the whole paleo thing a try, as I've recently had to go gluten free so not that much of a jump! I was never a big meat person though and since chowing down on it every day (a bit of red meat but mostly chicken/turkey) I've felt horrible acid reflux, even waking me up at night! Not used to such an acidic diet but despite still having lots of veg, it's really off putting. Surprised to hear only if people whose digestion is improved since going paleo. Wanted to cut the dairy put natural yogurt, as it's a neutral ph has been great at putting out the fire so to speak:)
Anyone have similar prob? Beginning to think it's not the right way of eating for my body!

Paleo doesn't have to be meat heavy (and btw meat isn't 'acidic' the whole acid/base thing has been debunked), you can have a plant-based diet and be very paleo with lots of root vegetables and potatoes. If this is what suits you go for it!

I would wonder about eating so much chicken though, chicken and turkey don't have the best diets and aren't the 'cleanest' of meats so to speak. Bit of beef or lamb might have a different result maybe?

Well, I think all proteins are acidic to different degrees, and veg/fruit and a few others are alkaline. It's fact and think it's a pretty bold statment to say it's debunked ya bold thing:)! The burning sensation I've been getting is testement to that!!!

But anyway, I thought paleo is basically meant to be primarily meat based...though I'm a big fish lover as well as eggs so I dunno. Maybe it's just too much protein or something. Keeping sweet potatoes for training days but am trying to eat more other root veg as ive been living on mostly greens for years! Loving all the fats tho...paleo bars a la doolee ftw:) might ease off in the chicken though as maybe you're right and it's more of a quality thing. It's a pretty expensive way of eating if u want to do it right that's for sure. Wish my purse could stretch to organic meat and veg to see if that has an effect:)

Hey Doolee, nice to "see" you again!
Re the meat I know Dunnes do a brand of organic beef, called the herdsman or something that is not much more than regular.
Sorry to hear about the reflux :( Hope it settles down soon.

Ah thanks for that. Yep, I've had some nice meals of mince and stuff but tying not to overdose on red meat as not sure if its the healthiest. Think the biggest change was having a proper protein brekkie, as apposed to millet and fruit or porridge! Now its boiled egg and bit of smoked salmon after the gym.
You seem to be doing great, fair play to you. Are you feeling the benefits that the paleo forums keep boasting about?

I don't doubt the heartburn! Just that the acid/alkaline thing is more of an old wives tale, and it's not really got anything to do with heartburn anyhow. :)

But we definitely all have different protein needs depending on various factors but if your going from low to high you're going to have an adjustment period as your digestive enzymes play catch-up!

Do you know, not really
Maybe if you go from eating crap to healthy it's a big difference but going from healthy to healthIER doesn't make for big noticeable results.
No weight loss anyway, but I just want to be healthier for it's own sake ifykwim, not so much results driven.
I went from having protein only breakfast to having protein + veg, in fact that is my formula for every meal now.

Yeah, maybe if youre already obese or whatever then obviously the results will be more extreme. But as you said, healthy to healthier is a bit of a let down, weird as that sounds! I think its a bit different for women though. We need a certain amount of fat on our bodies to keep the hormones working properly and all these diets (for want of a better word) are generally written for men, by men. I know Sarah Fragoso is the main girly rep but I dunno. Think its important to remember that everyBODY is different and we're not meant to all do and live exactly the same way.
Keep it up though, it takes time as you know. And keep posting up those pics!
    doolee;)

Lol, no chance of me going sub 15% and periods stopping! I love Sarah Fragosa, just bought her book and have listened to all her podcasts.

Just had lunch - fried (in yummy butter) mushrooms, cherry tomatoes & spinach, a fried egg and the leftover kale in cream sauce from last night.
I'd usually have a cup of coffee with half tsp of sugar and 2 squares (20g) of lindt dark chocolate now but just having the coffee, no sugar....
I did have a lot of fruit today though, maybe a bit cheaty? :o

Weighed in this morning and the same as last week...which is annoying, and body fat up too, but maybes last week big drop was unrealstic.

I wouldn't worry about red meat, it's healthier than chicken with a better omega 3:6 ratio.

last night mrsAmerc made grilled turkey breasts with some fried tomatoes and grilled avocado ( brushed with olive oil and balsamic first ) and I have to say - wow ! Avocado really comes alive when grilled. it's so much nicer than raw and still super healthy !

I admire your ability to stick out the primal gig! I came across this site and I like the sound of alot of the recipes! You probably have already heard of it but for anyone who hasnt..

Nom Nom is a lovely site with great recipes

I'm one of the ones that went from ultra crap diet to hard core paleo in one day. I got all the benefits... I am sleeping for the Nation, my skin is clear, I have lots of energy, no pain, I have lost weight, I have the desire to move, I look forward to cooking but the bit that wins out above all others for me is that my large intestine is working ON ITS OWN!

I made paleo scotch eggs today and had one for lunch and YUM! I made my own sausage meat with the mincer attachment for my KitchenAid that I bought 13 months ago and never used. I'm tempted to make my own sausages next :-)

Just tried it, hmmm...not convinced it is that much nicer but good to try these things.
Whoever would have thunk that an afternoon snack for me would turn out to be rocket & avocado salad!

Thanks for the recipe site banshee (are all g'ems girls follwing me? ;) )

Great to hear it is working so well for you Lotwan - re sleeping I have been adopting the total blackout that Sissons advises, I love it!
I'd LOVE a scotch egg - what is the outer coating made from?

really ? maybe have a go using some lemon or lime juice, also I should have mentioned it was a grill pan not an ordinary grill ( that may or may not make the difference ).

Ah I did it on a piece of foil under the grill. I'm defintiely not making more washing up for myself ! Mind you hauling out my Le Cresuot griddle pan would be quite the workout.
Dinner was thai green chicken curry with cashew nuts (no rice).

I minced pork belly & seasoned it with onion, garlic, herbs & veggie pepper. Rolled the boiled eggs in almond flour* (to make them less slippery), wrapped them in the pork, rolled them in almond flour again & then baked them in the oven.

I had minced pork left over and made sausage burgers. I baked them in the oven too. For my afternoon snack I had one of the sausage burgers and a conference pear. What a completely rockin' combination.

    * almond flour is what the USAnians call ground almonds

I hear yea - but a little planning and you can do the whole lot on the griddle pan, chicken, avocado, tomatoes maybe a banana ( wonderful fried or griddled ) chuck this on top of a bed of raw spinach with some walnuts ( and maybe some goats cheese  and a sliced apple ) in it and hey presto - an awesome meal !

That looks very nice, I actually stumbled across this today and I am dying to try it out, the quinoa is putting me off though [/effort]

Is there a link missing? Quinoa as a grain isn't paleo, or is it? I have heard it referred to as an ancient grain though.
Dinner was yummy and extremely filling, I could have left the non paleo corn really.

Looks great...though I cant seem to stomach bacon.
Today I felt like I was eating all day or at least shoving protein down my gob at every opportunity! I also made the mistake of buying dried apricots! I'm kind of not sure what to eat in the morning before the gym. I'm out the door before 7am and up about 6.15 and had been using a cuppa tea and a bucket load of raisins for a sugar high to get me going! These days I've been having some natural yoghurt with protein powder in it and maybe a few nuts. Then the protein brekkie, eggs and smoked salmon after with a few veg. I've made paleo bar things in ice cube trays so I usually nibble one of those too!

Anyone any suggestions of what they have that would be more paleo friendly pre workout...at an early hour?

How about a banana with almond butter? = sugar hit + protein
I split a banana down the length, spread with the nut butter, sandwich back together & cut into slices. Nice on crisp apple slices too.
Good idea re the paleo bar in ice cube trays, helps keep the portion small.

Holy mother that sounds good! But carby? I sort of assumed bananas were the forbidden fruit so to speak...
Could it be??? Sounds too good to be true! Id actually been programmed to not eat bananas for the last few years of training, and weight loss and I coincidently bought two of them during the week....still in the fruit bowl!

Its really really REALLY hard convincing yourself to eat loads of fat do you think? Its sort of taking me ages to come around to the idea. The grain thing is no probs...its the fats! I really should just get one of the books and read the bloody thing instead of trying to figure it out from all the different sources!

Yep Im a total believer in the icecube tray thing. Its super easy to feast on a batch of paleo bars. I sort of use them as a dessert too after the din dins :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,934 ✭✭✭Dotcomdolly

Oh they are carby, certainly the carbiest of all fruits, 30g+ so you prob should stick with the apple :o Don't mind me, I'm a paleo rebel :D

I am shocked when I look at my MFP breakdown and some days see 45% fat, esp as I come from a WW background but by god I love butter!

I know the Robb Wolf book is in the library catalogue so you could just borrow it fromt here, not the mark sissons one though.

eta - #2 sugar free day done & dusted.

I have done 3 weeks now & don't want it to end. :-)

Those fun burgers look great. I'm making meatballs from Paleo Eating For Modern People :-)

I made chorizo & sweet potato hash for lunch yesterday & it was yummy :-) I'm not one for taking pictures of her food so I have nothing to how for it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 390 ✭✭Doolee

Well, Im on a day off work this morning so I roasted off some nuts (which I never do...always raw come to think of it), sprinkled over some Almond Meal as the yanks call it! Bit of coconut oil and bobs your uncle. Added a sprinkle of xylitol too for kicks, which is against the law. The recipe called for honey but as regards to GL, that would be a poor choice IMO. Had some ontop of yoghurt with some protein powder in it and some berries. Nice change from my post gym eggs and salmon:)

On a study break now...apple and spoon of almond butter! Think I've reached my nut quota for the day:)

Yeah I was very tired yesterday and forgot to put it in, I have edited it now though! :o
