Has anybody here looked into driving from Dublin to the Alps (e.g. via the UK & the Channel Tunnel)?

How did the costs stacked up relative to multiple airfares, car hire, etc. for a group of people? Was it worth the extra hassle?

We have done it as far as Switzerland in a fairly thirsty 4*4 but here is the breakdown.

Landbridge return for two € 550 return. (Better and cheaper than the direct Rosslare - Cherbourg 18 hour trip.

    Two tanks of fuel € 400 - (Its a big 4*4)
Tolls through france - approx €60

Overnight accommodation ranging from €40 a night to whatever you are having. Leaving Dublin full tank on a Sat Am 8:30 Swift ferry from Dublin port

Arrive Hollyhead 10:30 Stop at Birmingham 45 min,2 hours in Traffic at Dartford crossing (Not unusual). Eurotunnel at 7:30 Pm - Fill up half way between Calais and Reims

Leave Reims at 10:30am Sunday Another fill up stop for a long lunch in Montreaux, Arrived in resort (Valais in Switzerland) at 20:00 Sunday night.

Plus side you can take your time hit multiple resorts and have no luggage limits. Was great craic for us to be honest and we would recommend it to anyone

Fattes, thanks for that. Was your party just adults or kids too? If you travelled with kids, was it the hell on earth that it sounds like it would be?

I guess that it would be worth looking into for a 2+ week trip, but not worth it for just the one week.
